September General Meeting

The next meeting of the Underwood Hills Neighborhood Association will be held Monday, September 12 at 7:00 PM at Red Brick Brewing (2323 Defoor Hills Rd).  Come enjoy a beer and socialization with your neighbors as we discuss important business and take a membership vote on a Planning item.  The meeting agenda is below.
  • Vote on Parking Reduction for 2060 Defoor Hills Rd (the Upper Westside mural building) V-16-228 - change in use from industrial to retail (antiques dealer) requires parking increase to 117 spaces from the current 42 spaces on the property.  Applicant requests Special Exception to remain at 42 spaces.  The Planning Committee voted unanimously to support this variance.
  • Atlanta's Investment in MARTA presentation on November MARTA referendum
  • Lifecycle Building Center presentation
  • Other general updates on what is going on in the neighorhood

A Letter from the President

...don't get too excited, it's not President Obama.  Read on for a note from UHNA President, Kristin Olson.

Neighbors,

It has been my honor to serve as President of UHNA for the past three years and as Treasurer the year before that.  I have learned so much, been humbled in so many ways, and most of all, thoroughly enjoyed forming lasting relationships with so many of my neighbors.  I am often asked, “Why do you do this?  You have a full time job, a family, and are involved in other organizations?”  My answer is sometimes, “I really don’t know.”  But, that’s not true.  I do know.  I care so much about community.  I care about the health and quality of life of where we call home.  I care about people.  I love Atlanta, and I love our neighborhood and our neighbors.  I have met so many amazing people.  And, I also love being “in the mix” and helping to shape what is going on in our community.  There’s absolutely a mix of selfish and selfless reasons I am involved.  If you feel the same way, get involved!

After four years of serving on the Executive Board, I am taking a step back this year to pursue another passion of mine as a board member for Kate’s Club, a nonprofit that serves children who have experienced parent/guardian or sibling loss.  My dad passed away when I was 12, so this is something that has been dear to my heart for many years.  I will still be involved in UHNA in a number of ways, just not as President.

Elections are in November, and I want to encourage any of you reading this who have any interest in getting involved to please reach out to one of the board members or steering committee chairs (contact info on the right sidebar of this newsletter).  We’d be happy to answer your questions and help you find the right place to connect.  There are so many ways to get involved, big and small.  We are going to have several “vacancies” this year, including in executive positions (all positions are always open to anyone who is interested).  Most of us are staying involved, just doing something different.  We have a lot of big and little ideas, and we need passionate neighbors to help make them happen and to contribute their own ideas.  The relationships you form with your neighbors by being involved are priceless, and the opportunity to learn more about what is going on in and around our neighborhood and how city government functions is fantastic.  To learn more about all our positions, click here

The community that has been built in Underwood Hills is why we have so many neighbors who are on second and third homes here.  Let’s all chip in what we can to continue to make Underwood Hills a wonderful place to live that we can be proud of.  Thank you to all of you have encouraged and supported me over the past four years and for all you’ve given to our wonderful neighborhood!

With gratitude and appreciation,
Kristin Olson

Underwood Hills Park Teen Committee

The Underwood Hills Park Teen Committee supports and improves the neighborhood through volunteer work and creative projects. They also contribute by involving children at neighborhood events, helping with Soccer in the Streets, and fundraising for new equipment.

Mia and Nora Epstein have led a project to raise money for fitness equipment in the park. They have received a $2,400 matching grant from Parkpride and approval from City of Atlanta department of recreation. The matching grant means they now have to fundraise $2,400. They’ve received donations from Crossfit North Atlanta and have applied for a Disney Friends for Change Grant. All donations go directly to Parkpride, a 501c3 organization.

If you would like to get involved or would like to donate, text Mia Epstein at 404-625-0238

Playgroup Updates

Underwood Hills Play Group is one of the many things that makes our neighborhood wonderful. Play Group brings parents and children together for fun, friendship and seasonal celebrations.

Weather permitting, join us at the park every Friday from 4-6pm. Play Group dates are announced “in real time” on our NextDoor page.

For any new families that have moved to the area we are working to provide you with playgroup or moms group neighborhood resources. For anyone that has an existing play/mom group that you are willing to open up to new neighbors, email us to let us know.

If you’re looking to get involved, we ask that each family provide a $20.00 annual contribution which goes towards hosting seasonal parties and Popsicles for Playgroup Fridays.

Soccer in the Streets: Fridays, 3:30-6PM

Soccer in the Streets (SITS) is proud to be partnering with Underwood Hills to offer their first integrated cross-cultural soccer program. This is a donation-only program that runs after school on Fridays 3:30 - 6PM at the Lower Field in Underwood Hills Park and includes dinner sponsored by local businesses including Chipotle, Chick Fil A, Papa Johns and many others. After a successful pilot last spring, this Fall, SITS is expanding its program to 50 kids (25 kids from Agape and 25 kids outside of Agape) targeting grades K-3 whose families have an interest in promoting cross cultural engagement within our community. If you are interested in participating, finding out more or volunteering with this innovative program, please contact Cherie Ong at 678 641 6428 or email her at cherio_122@yahoo.com to find out more details about the program as there are limited spaces left.

SITS works with nearly 2000 youth across the metro Atlanta area, providing soccer training with professional coaches along with character development and mentoring programs. Check out their website to find out more: soccerstreets.org.

October Park Events with Trees Atlanta

Trees Atlanta and Atlanta City Council representatives will engage in the first city-wide tree planting in our history; dubbed “Plantlanta,” the project will consist of a dozen tree plantings – in every council district in the city, led by representatives from Trees Atlanta. Luckily Underwood Hills Park is the chosen site for District 9 and 40 trees will be planted at our park. Join us October 15 at Underwood Hills Park to welcome Trees Atlanta and their Volunteers for “Plantlanta”.  Trees Atlanta will be providing their own volunteers to plant, mulch, and water these new trees but we’d like your support to show them our appreciation for these plantings.

Trees Atlanta will also be participating in our annual Volunteer day at the park on October 22, and will be participating and doing some creek restoration plantings. More information

Check out NextDoor for more information as we get closer to these two events.
