SCHOOLS NorthEast is delighted to confirm that the Rt Hon Justine Greening MP, Secretary of State for Education, will be giving the keynote speech at Summit 2016.


The main speaker had been initially confirmed as Education Secretary Nicky Morgan back in February this year. Following new government appointments, Mrs Greening has confirmed she will retain the commitment made by her predecessor and attend the SCHOOLS NorthEast Summit.

Free online portal to be launched for marked exam scripts

A new online portal to make all of Edexcel’s marked scripts available free of charge has been confirmed by parent company Pearson, which currently provides GCSE scripts when they’re requested but only after the deadline for enquiries has passed, and for a fee.

Reinvigorating the ‘Wasted Years’: raising standards in KS3 English
SCHOOLS NorthEast, in partnership with Ofsted, is holding a one day conference focussed on raising standards in English. Delegates will look at KS3 in the contexts of KS2 and KS4 to ensure that they can maximise this period and support students to achieve at GCSE and beyond. Churchill Community College has been commissioned by National College for Teaching and Leadership to train school leaders in the North East to undertake pupil premium reviews, with the purpose to improve a schools pupil premium strategy. This free meeting is an opportunity for all teachers within schools in the Northumberland, Tyne, Wear and County Durham areas to learn about the Great North Maths Hub, and to guide their work in the region.

Supporting SEND: Transition to Uni 2016
This informative evening is for teachers and advisers who support young people in Year 10 and above with specific learning requirements, providing key updates on support available at university and interactive workshops surrounding the application process. This will be the second Supporting SEND event organised by NERAP at Newcastle University and it is free to attend.

Schools Northeast   Summer 2016 was packed with great achievements - during the Olympic Games for the first half, followed by A-level and GCSE results in August. As the dust settles and we draw the line on attainment, Barnard Castle School Headmaster Alan Stevens writes about Olympian expectations: "The real challenge in teaching comes in setting high achievable expectations for the A-E grade candidates and then exceeding them. That is what adding value is about and that is truly worth celebrating." Read more >

Schools Northeast   The Education Policy Institute and the London School of Economics published analysis of the performance of post-2010 sponsored academies. The paper looks at the performance of 205 academies approved to be sponsored after May 2010 and which converted by 2014, and found that schools tend to improve results a year before they become a sponsored academy. Results rise again once the school becomes a sponsored academy but "this impact appears to taper away to zero in relation to the control group."  Read more >

Schools Northeast   The North East now has the highest proportion of pupils eligible for Pupil Premium, overtaking London. The numbers in our region have seen a slight decrease, but less significant compared to the national average. The overall pupil population in the North East is growing at the slowest rate of all English regions. Out of a total of 338,469 North East pupils on the roll for this academic year, 35.47% are eligible for PP, followed by London with 34.67%. Read more >
