UW and Seattle City Light partner to install solar on three UW residence halls

Mercer Court solar panels

The University of Washington is installing solar panels on three residence halls in partnership with Seattle City Light's Green Up program to support research on clean energy and smart grid technology. Seattle City Light's Green Up program is contributing $225,000 toward the purchase of the solar panels. This contribution enabled the UW to compete for the Washington State Department of Commerce Solar Grant Program, which is also giving $225,000 in matching funds.

The panels will be placed on Elm, Alder and Maple halls this fall, and the combined installation will act as a testbed for research on how solar energy can be combined with other demand-side resources such as battery systems, in order to provide controllable power and voltage support. The student group UW Solar has been working closely with UW staff and faculty to prepare for the installation.

The theme for this year's festival is "Connect the Dots," providing a look at the many diverse areas sustainability encompasses and the need to make the connections and address the larger picture to achieve our goals.

The festival's centerpiece event, the Sustainability Exhibitor Fair, will be held in the HUB Ballroom on Tuesday, Oct. 18. Other festival highlights presented by UW Sustainability will include the Husky Highlight, Sustainability Careers Meet & Greet, and Huskies for Humanity. New UW Livable City Year program launched

City of Auburn The University of Washington has begun a yearlong partnership with the City of Auburn, under the new Livable City Year program. UW students and professors will work with the City of Auburn to advance the city’s goals for livability and sustainability throughout the upcoming academic year.

In this inaugural year, UW faculty will lead classes to work on 15 to 20 projects identified by the City of Auburn. Students will provide tens of thousands of hours of study and production toward specific projects identified by Auburn, while benefiting from the opportunity to apply classroom lessons to real-world problems.

The UW’s Livable City Year program is a cross-university collaboration led by faculty directors Branden Born, an associate professor in the Department of Urban Design and Planning, and Jennifer Otten, an assistant professor in the School of Public Health, in collaboration with UW Sustainability and with foundational support from Urban@UW, the College of Built Environments and Undergraduate Academic Affairs.
