Birthing life in one of the most difficult places

Welcome to our Maternity Center!

We officially opened our maternity center in 2013 with the goal of providing safe, clean deliveries to help prevent maternal and infant mortalities. South Sudan is listed as the 5th most dangerous place to have a baby, but because of lack of data, many believe it is the most dangerous place to birth. Therefore our staff works hard to ensure pregnant women are cared for well and encouraged to deliver in our clinic instead of at home.

Unfortunately, trying to break traditions in this land is tough. Many women still choose to deliver at home with the aid of an older woman. (Of the 5,389 patients who attended the clinic for antenatal care only 2% chose to deliver at the clinic). These women lack gloves and clean cord ties, the houses they birth in are made of mud and dirt, and if there are any complications it is quite difficult to get the women to a clinic or the hospital in time to save either life.

We are working hard to help women understand the importance of clinic or hospital delivery. This is accomplished through health education, home visitation, and meeting with the traditional birth attendants to provide essential training and clean delivery kits.

Please keep our staff in your prayers as they work diligently to help bring much-needed behavior change. Pray they will faithfully share Christ in word and deed.

Our semi-annual report has been uploaded. Read all that has been accomplished through our amazing healthcare staff by clicking this link: http://bit.ly/1Y2XKGs.

Thank you for praying for us and supporting our work!

Cathy Hoelzer, MPH, PA-C
Health Program Manager

Every woman who comes in for antenatal care is examined well and given any needed medications for anemia, the prevention of malaria, or other miscellaneous complaints common to pregnancy. They also receive health education that will aid them to be good mothers.

We work hard to partner with the Traditional Birth Attendants. A yearly refresher course training is provided along with monthly meetings to answer any questions, provide them with clean delivery kits, and encourage them to bring their patients to our clinic for delivery. This is especially essential for the Maban villages that are located more than 2 hours from our clinic.

  1. Please keep our staff in your prayers as they seek to provide excellent, Christ-centered healthcare to all who enter our doors.
  2. Pray we can shine the light of Christ among all those who don't know Christ personally.
  3. Praise the Lord with us for the many who are choosing to follow Christ after hearing His story.
  4. The rains were supposed to have started by now and after a few rains last month many planted and now we have gone weeks without rain and their crops are failing. It will be a lean year and we fear malnutrition will rise exponentially.
  5. One of our long-term medical missionaries will be leaving in a few months and we need another NP or PA to replace her. I'm also in need of an administrative assistant with a MPH to help with all the reports, writing proposals for funding, and keeping this large program running smoothly. Pray the Lord will thrust forth workers.
  6. Please intercede on behalf of South Sudan. Conflicts still arise here and there and the economy is failing terribly. Major infrastructures are collapsing affecting medical care and education.
  7. Pray Jehovah Jireh will touch the hearts of those with the gift of giving to become monthly financial donors. We need a host of "champions" for this clinic to stand in the gap on our behalf. If you would like to become a champion, please contact me by email on ways you can help.
