Featured Resource

Multilingual Glossary

We are excited to announce that the Multilingual Math Glossary is now online! The glossary, which will be continually updated, includes math-specific terms as well as general terms that are found within the SFUSD Math Core Curriculum. You can access it through the link above, or on the sfusdmath.org website within the Curriculum Resources tab: www.sfusdmath.org/multilingual-glossary.html.

Please spread the word! We look forward to building on this work with your help, and supporting teachers with target language instruction in mathematics for all SFUSD students. All feedback on the document (such as terminology, translation choices, and usability) should be sent to Glenn Kenyon.

Schools that have been involved in the Complex Instruction Program will continue to be supported this year through the same structures: T-facs meetings, Collaboration Days, Video Club, and follow-up days for teachers who took the summer course.

The first Complex Instruction Teacher Facilitator meeting is on September 6 from 4:15-6:15. These meetings happen monthly throughout the year. For more information, contact Angela Torres.

This year, we will be printing and delivering the curriculum in two batches: one that you have already received and a second in December. If you have any questions about Curriculum delivery, please contact Vriana Kempster.

Recent Activities

We had the opportunity to work with many math teachers before the beginning of the school year.

More than 100 Teacher Leaders from Elementary and K-8 Schools met for a two-day Summer Institute to launch the school year. Teacher Leaders improved their content knowledge of Operations and Algebraic Thinking, launched their learning strand, and planned with grade-level colleagues.

The Teacher Leaders from the schools who are working with the Problem-Solving Cycle gathered with the Stanford PSC team to launch the year. They experienced a packed three days with a focus on the Standards for Math Practice, the 5 Practices for Orchestrating Mathematical Discussions, and the Problem-Solving Cycle.

In July, some math teachers attended the Complex Instruction Course to learn and experience the principles and practices of CI and gain tools and strategies that support all students to participate equally in heterogeneous groups doing rigorous math. The following week, all teachers from the CI schools were invited to attend two CI Collaboration Days where they experienced doing rigorous math in groups and planned using the SFUSD Core Curriculum with a CI lens.

Teacher Leaders at all schools and grade-levels brought their learning back to their school sites on August 11.

Thank you for all that you do!
