Clean Schools with Keep Australia Beautiful

Many schools experience difficulties managing litter and recognise the importance of a clean and healthy environment.

Educating students about the effects of litter and influencing beliefs and attitudes are key steps towards behaviour change and litter reduction in the community as a whole.

The Clean Schools program aims at changing the littering behaviour of students through a whole school approach to litter prevention and a range of resources to help.

Fremantle Recycling Hub

If you live in the City of Fremantle, there is a great recycling hub in the Council Office at reception for your printer cartridges, batteries and mobile phones. You can also check out the Recycle Right App for other locations.

Waste & Recycling Conference Waste 101 Tour

On Wednesday 14 September the SMRC hosted the Waste & Recycling Conference 101 Tour.

This Tour was an opportunity to cram a day full of different waste experiences – whether new to the industry or just needed a bit of a refresher course.

The Tour started with a workshop at the Southern Metropolitan Regional Council’s (SMRC) waste education centre – which will have ensured participants knew their PET from their HDPE and their WAWA from the DER.

Attendees took home a free Waste 101 Guide explaining the What, Who and How in the waste industry.

Join the 12th WA Beach Cleanup 15-16 Oct 2016

Register a beach for a Clean-up any time over the weekend of October 15th & 16th, 2016 or volunteer with an existing group.

All Clean-up materials are provided, so all you need is a pair of hands and some energy to spring clean our beaches.

Problem Waste - Medical Waste

Needles, syringes and sharps are classed as medical waste and should never be placed in your kerbside bins. Medical waste must be destroyed to prevent risk of infection from pathogens. Needles and syringes can be safely disposed of by returning to a needle and syringe exchange program, placing in a special needle and syringe disposal unit provided by some local governments or businesses, or arranging for a waste disposal company to assist in the disposal of large quantities of needles and syringes.

Would You Like To Join The Waste Recycling Education Network?

If you are interested in waste and sustainability, educating the community and making a difference, the Waste Recycling Education Network needs you!

All it takes is a few hours of your time to attend a meeting and assist with a community waste education project. Everyone is welcome to join.

The group meet on a Thursday every two months and will be involved in some exciting projects in the community in 2016. If you have any questions or would like to talk about joining, you can contact Taryn Davis at the SMRC on 9329 2700 or email tdavis@smrc.com.au
