7T MRI seminar series at Glasgow
This month kicks off an international seminar series hosted by the University of Glasgow, in preparation for the opening of the Imaging Centre of Excellence at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow which will house the first 7T clinical MRI scanner in Scotland. Details of the first two seminars are as follows:

After September, the regular schedule is for seminars in this 2016/17 series to be held on the last Wednesday of every month.
A link to the full seminar series schedule will be posted on the SINAPSE website when it becomes available, and arrangements are being sought to record or videocast the seminars for interested attendees unable to travel to Glasgow.

Feature on Scotland's world class imaging facilities in latest NRS magazine

The latest issue of the quarterly magazine Research Matters published by NHS Research Scotland (NRS) includes an article featuring the start-of-the-art medical imaging facilities being opened at SINAPSE centres, including the 7T MRI scanner to be installed at Glasgow and first MR PET system in Scotland which recently arrived at Edinburgh, as we reported in last month's newsletter.

Image of the Month: Episodic Memory EEG
|

Our September Image of the Month, courtesy of Dr Jamie Murray, shows topographic maps of scalp-recorded EEG illustrating a Left Parietal effect associated with recollection in an episodic memory task, during the time window 500-800ms after test stimulus presentation. Greater neural activity for high-precision than low-precision memory responses shows that the Left Parietal effect is sensitive to the precision of recollected information.

SINAPSE Member Profile: Marta Guarisco
|

At the start of this year, SINAPSE awarded funding for PhD studentships on imaging-related research projects in partnership with external organisations. The Member Profile section of our newsletter is currently being used to introduce the incoming students.

|
Marta Guarisco will be starting a PhD studentship at the University of Glasgow where her project is titled 'Automated analysis tools for assessing the vasculature in imaging for acute stroke' with Prof Keith Muir and Dr Ian Poole, funded by SINAPSE and Toshiba Medical Visualization Systems Europe. The aim of the project is to develop and test new image analysis tools, most likely involving atlas based and machine learning approaches, to automate the scoring system of collateral flow in CTA in cases of acute ischaemic stroke. Marta completed her Masters Degree in Physics at the University of Trento (Italy) in 2014. She then continued her studies at the University of Glasgow, where she completed a Masters in Nuclear Technology in January 2016. She has always been interested in medical physics, particularly medical imaging. For her masters project she worked on the development of a GATE simulation for the study of attenuation corrections in myocardial perfusion imaging and she is now very much looking forward to continuing her academic career in the medical imaging area thanks to this PhD opportunity.
