Orwells Restaurant wins Waitrose Good Food Guide Restaurant of the Year 2017

Ryan Simpson and Liam Trotman, the chefs behind Orwells Restaurant near Henley in South Oxfordshire are delighted to have been awarded the much-coveted Waitrose Good Food Guide, ‘Restaurant of the Year 2017’. The restaurant has also been included in the Waitrose Good Food Guide’s UK top 50 Restaurants and been awarded 7/10 confirming Orwells Restaurant’s cooking demonstrates a ‘high level of ambition and individuality’ and ‘attention to the smallest detail’ as well as showcasing ‘accurate and vibrant dishes’.

“Both Liam and I are overwhelmed to be recognised as The Waitrose Good Food Guide, ‘Restaurant of The Year’. It’s a great achievement that highlights all our hard work and how we continue to naturally progress & evolve within the industry that we adore” Ryan Simpson

Ryan and Liam opened Orwells in 2010 having gained a Michelin star whilst working together at The Goose in Britwell Salome. Their combined experience also includes Winteringham Fields, Maison Troisgros, Bovey Castle, 60 Hope Street, Pierre Gagnaire, Guy Savoy and The Elephant. The Good Food Guide named Ryan ‘Up and Coming Chef of the Year’ in 2010. Soon after launching Orwells Restaurant in 2010 Ryan and Liam were acknowledged by all the major guides, including winning The Good Food Guide Reader Restaurant of the Year in 2012 and being awarded three AA Rosettes.

Not only has Orwells Restaurant won awards for skill in the kitchen, it also holds a three gold star sustainability rating from the Sustainable Restaurant Association ‘demonstrating an exceptional standard of sustainability’. Up to 75% of the restaurant’s fruit, vegetables and herbs are grown on their local small holding and all other ingredients are sourced as locally as possible. Liam is an avid beekeeper and the chefs use their homemade honey instead of sugar wherever possible as well as selling it to support Friends of the Earth’s ‘The Bee Cause’.

This year, Ryan has made his made his TV debut on ‘Yes Chef’, a brand new BBC One series scheduled for broadcast in September. The show, in which the legendary Pierre Koffmann is judging, will see Michelin chefs mentor home cooks as they compete in the kitchen.

'If you're within a 100 miles of Orwells-on-Thames, the sun is shining and you're at a loose-ish end, drop everything and go now' 'Orwells does assured, grown-up, imaginative modern British cooking'. 9/10 rating from The Daily Telegraph anonymous restaurant review 18th June 2016.
