I talk often in my workshops about the concept of HESITATION. As artists, especially those just beginning their journeys, hesitation comes from many different sources. There is the voice in the head that screams, or often whispers, YOU WILL DO IT WRONG. There is the desire to create a beautiful piece of art but the skill set hasn't caught up with the heart of the artist yet. What I try and teach my students and practicing artists is that overcoming that hesitation with the belief that every mark can be changed, altered, or used is integral in breaking free of the gap between wanting to create and actually creating.
Understanding our audience as we head towards a canvas can go a long way in freeing ourselves up from the heaviness of being hesitant. If we alone are our audience then create with reckless abandon and have a go with some fun. If a specific audience is in mind, or a larger market, approach the canvas with a bit more knowing of what you hope to express, how you hope to convey it, and how best to use your medium in a way that serves you.
"Thumping The Weirdo" on the head is an expression I use to help silence the voice of hesitation or fear often. It is a visualization that helps me literally thump the 'thing' that tells me I cannot achieve what I set out. So far, it works brilliantly. Finding the source of your hesitation, creating a plan to defeat it, and moving the line will help you lay bricks as an artist that are more confident and successful as you grow. Here is leaning in and creating because guess what? YOUR MARKS MATTER!

Teaching artists to take the skills they walk in the door with and move them forward towards their own unique voice is what my teaching is all about. Every artist is at a different place in their journey and through years of teaching young ones to older ones and painting for 14 years, I have found a teaching style that meets the needs of all students in big ways.
From beginners to advanced painters, I offer workshops in all levels including figurative, abstract, and impact workshops that help you learn how to tweak your skills to impact the heart of the viewer in more powerful ways.
