Ardith Goodwin's Art Notes!

Hey Y'all!
One of the things I love about being a professional artist and educator is connecting with other creatives from all walks of life. ArtNotes will be a new feature I am offering filled with tips on learning to be more creative, finding your way through your painting practice, details and first dibs on my workshops, and how I will share my most recent artwork that is available. Living a juicy, creative life is a beautiful thing and I look forward to sharing that path with you all!

NEW WORK!

Figurative Abstracts are such a love for me as I combine my love of form, color, and transparent layers. To view these pieces and my current works available head over to my website. If you have questions message me please. I will be sharing quite a bit of my miniature works and small studies in the months to come and they will land here first!
I talk often in my workshops about the concept of HESITATION. As artists, especially those just beginning their journeys, hesitation comes from many different sources. There is the voice in the head that screams, or often whispers, YOU WILL DO IT WRONG. There is the desire to create a beautiful piece of art but the skill set hasn't caught up with the heart of the artist yet. What I try and teach my students and practicing artists is that overcoming that hesitation with the belief that every mark can be changed, altered, or used is integral in breaking free of the gap between wanting to create and actually creating.
Understanding our audience as we head towards a canvas can go a long way in freeing ourselves up from the heaviness of being hesitant. If we alone are our audience then create with reckless abandon and have a go with some fun. If a specific audience is in mind, or a larger market, approach the canvas with a bit more knowing of what you hope to express, how you hope to convey it, and how best to use your medium in a way that serves you.

"Thumping The Weirdo" on the head is an expression I use to help silence the voice of hesitation or fear often. It is a visualization that helps me literally thump the 'thing' that tells me I cannot achieve what I set out. So far, it works brilliantly. Finding the source of your hesitation, creating a plan to defeat it, and moving the line will help you lay bricks as an artist that are more confident and successful as you grow. Here is leaning in and creating because guess what? YOUR MARKS MATTER!
Teaching artists to take the skills they walk in the door with and move them forward towards their own unique voice is what my teaching is all about. Every artist is at a different place in their journey and through years of teaching young ones to older ones and painting for 14 years, I have found a teaching style that meets the needs of all students in big ways.

From beginners to advanced painters, I offer workshops in all levels including figurative, abstract, and impact workshops that help you learn how to tweak your skills to impact the heart of the viewer in more powerful ways. For more info about what it's like to take a workshop with me, hop on over to my blog and read all about it! WHAT'S IT LIKE?

My last workshop of 2016 will be The Imaginative Figure on October 8-9th at the Workhouse Art Center in Lorton, Va. near D.C. Registration is open and there are a few spots left for that. You can GO HERE to register!

LOOKING AHEAD!
2017 is looking to be an amazing year! I will be hosting workshops for sure in Tulas, Oklahoma City, Mobile, Al, Fairhope, Al. and most likely Houston, Seattle/Portland, and back to Michigan. Stay tuned for details because you will receive those before my general audience!
Before we announce it to the public, the incredible Shauna Meiri and I will be co-teaching The Expressive Figure Workshop in Fairhope, Al. April 7-10, 2017! She will be bringing her deconstruction skills and I will be teaching the imagination and fracturing aspect of creating loose, figurative abstracts. There are about 8 seats left from the workshop signees so I am offering those as first dibs to my newsletter members. For registration and more information GO HERE or email me at ardithgoodwin@gmail.com for questions.
Creativity goes hand in hand with children and there are so many tips and practices that can be as fun for kids as they are for adults. Bottle Cap Magnets is a craft that has so many different applications and creates a delightful product in the end. I use acrylic skins to make mine, but you could let your kids draw faces, use letters, numbers, or any type of visually interesting insert. Here is a blog post with step by step instructions as to how to create bottle cap magnets regardless of your age.
Every newsletter will come chock full of painting tips for artists from how to alter your grip for movement to how to know when you are done! Last year I created a list of 10 tips for the self taught artists which has been super helpful to so many. Here is a link to that list which shares first hand advice as to how to thrive as a self-taught artist!
(Just a reminder that you are receiving this newsletter for the first time because you have shown interest in my work, taken a class, or purchased art from me. If you received this in error my utmost apologies. Please unsubscribe just below this text and I will make sure it is corrected on my end! Peace and Paint y'all!)
