Dear Friends,

It is a busy time at Loyola and the Institute of Environmental Sustainability (IES) as we welcome new and returning students to another school year. The class of 2020 is one of our largest yet and we are enjoying getting to know each of them. They bring with them a strong sense of responsibility to the protection of our planet and noted in an incoming student survey that environmental sustainability continues to be a key differentiator for LUC. 43% of incoming freshman stated that LUC’s commitment to environmental sustainability was either “important” or “very important” to their choice of Loyola. This statistic goes hand-in-hand with the recent announcement that Loyola was ranked #7 in Sierra’s annual Cool Schools report! We are thrilled to be included in this important ranking for the second time.

As we grow and welcome new students, we continue to develop our programs in new and exciting ways. Whether it is the ever expanding breadth of internal and external student internships or the growing reach of the Loyola Farmers Market, IES strives to find relevant hands-on opportunities to allow our students to learn career skills. In fact, we have welcomed more than 4,500 local shoppers to the Loyola Farmers Market and provided much-needed organic food and produce to more than 100 low-income neighbors via the Link Card, Senior Food Farmers Market Coupons, and WIC programs. This is just one example of the ways our students contribute to our community in a meaningful and impactful way.

As we embark on our fourth full year, we thank you for your support. We will continue to put sustainability at the center of Loyola’s student experience and strive towards creating the next generation of change-makers.

Enjoy your semester,

Dr. Nancy C. Tuchman
Founding Director, Institute of Environmental Sustainability

Sustainable Living - Swedish Style

The Newman Institute Study Abroad Program is an opportunity for Loyola students to travel to Sweden and learn from one of the most sustainable countries on the planet. IES students are able to complete major and core coursework while abroad.
