His imagination and creativity have captured the hearts and minds of readers of all ages.  Shel Silverstein wrote countless poems …
some funny, some sad, some thought-provoking …
many having to do with things we all experience in life.  This week  in worship we’ll begin a new sermon series based on the poetry
of Silverstein to discover meaningful lessons we can all learn from.

Join us at 11am this Sunday ... All are welcome.

Tickets are now on sale for AvonFest 2016 … this is our annual fundraiser for Avondale Samaritan Place.  Come out to Cahaba Brewery on Sunday, September 11 from 5:30-7:30pm for some fellowship with friends, good brews and food, a silent auction, and most importantly, to celebrate and support the shared ministry between Avondale and Canterbury UMCs that is Avondale Samaritan Place.  You can purchase tickets for $50 online, Sunday morning, in the church office, or at the door.  If you have any items you’d like to donate to the silent auction, please contact one of our ASP Board members (Alison Jenkins, Jill Wheeler, Ginger Branson or Malinda Weaver).

Our church is proud to be a STAIR site for Birmingham school children.  STAIR is an after school reading program that helps 2nd grade children become stronger readers.  We need volunteers throughout the school year.  Each volunteer is assigned a child so they can read together, play word games, practice phonics and write stories.  The relationship that is formed not only helps them in reading, but it gives them a safe space to grow and develop.  Contact Alison Jenkins for more information or visit STAIR’s website.

Brown Bag Packing | Sunday, September 11
After Church in the ASP Gym
Come pack bags of food that are given to people
in our community who are hungry.

B3  (Basketball, Books, Burgers) | Begins Monday, September 12
4:00-6:00pm | ASP Gym
B3 is gearing up for a new year of basketball, books, and burgers on the 2nd Monday of each month.  B3 provides a safe environment for elementary children from the community to play ball, complete homework, socialize with friends, and experience the love of Christ through various activities.  This event is hosted by Canterbury UMC’s youth, but we want to see involvement from Avondale church members too.  Please prayerfully consider a monthly commitment to come get to know the kids, play ball or help with their homework, and serve them a meal.

Day of Service | Sunday, October 9
After worship we'll be working on various projects around Avondale
to show love and support to our neighbors.  If you have idea for projects and/or would like to lead one of the teams, email Pastor Malinda.
