City Interactive Map Portal Information

Where is the nearest park?  What is my parcel information and property value?  What did certain areas of the city look like back in 1998? Do any of my neighbors operate a home-based business?  What day of the week is my garbage picked up (pictured above)? These are just some of the questions that can be answered by visiting Clearfield City's recently launched online Interactive Map Portal.  Numerous maps are available to answer general questions about our city.

The maps and data have been compiled and prepared over the past few years by the City's Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Division, a part of Clearfield's Administrative Services Department, but have just recently been made available to the public.  The Map Portal will evolve over time with its content.  For example, maps related to various city events, such as the city's Fourth of July Celebration, will be available to residents before and during the events, then turned off when the activities have been concluded.

We invite you to take a moment to review the new Interactive Map Portal!

The Time is Now -
Emergency Preparedness Convention - September 10

Two valuable events are being held this month that increase your emergency preparedness knowledge, and prepare you to help not only your family, but the community as well, in the unfortunate event of a disaster.

An all day emergency preparedness convention, THE TIME IS NOW, is being held Saturday, September 10, from 9am - 9pm at Fisher Park, 934 S. 1000 E., Clearfield. With over 40 vendors in one location, you'll have a chance to stock up on the latest in first aid, water storage, solar, shelter, clothing, pet supplies, and more. More importantly, learn what you do and don't do from disaster pros, like the Red Cross, police, firefighters, CERT members, and more. We'll also have some fun activities for the whole family - including a Dutch Oven Cook-off, bounce house, Sparky the Dog, the earthquake simulator trailer, food vendors, etc.

If you would like to enter the Dutch Oven Cook-off please contact Clearfield City Emergency Manager, Laura Lewis, 801.525.2833, or by email.

Register today for the fall Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training being held September 27 through October 25, 2016, 6:00 pm - 9:30 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays at the North Davis Fire District West Point Station, 381 North 3150 West. Ages 11+ can attend the training, and is a great way for Scouts to work on merit badges (youth ages 11 - 16 must be accompanied by an adult).  Participants can purchase an optional CERT kit for $40/each, or $60 for two kits. Register online today!

(Pho Banh is located in Legend Hills, east side of I-15)

If the Yelp restaurant reviews are any indication, the new Vietnamese restaurant Pho Banh, which opened in July in Legend Hills, is a winner!

“This place is a hidden gem.”
“Their pho is the best I have tasted in Utah.”
“So delicious.”
“Service was fantastic.”
“I tried the Korean beef Banh Mi and it was so tasty!”

If you haven’t tried Vietnamese food, you’re probably wondering what is pho, and Banh Mi?

“Traditional Vietnamese food is a mix of Asian and European,” explained Minh Vu, the 34-year old father of three, and the proud owner of Pho Banh. “I wanted to bring something new to the community - there aren’t many Vietnamese restaurants in Davis County. We’ve created a contemporary, friendly environment, with fresh ingredients and good prices.”

Minh, who lived in Vietnam until he was 18, is eager to share and educate his customers on traditional Vietnamese food – especially the sandwiches, Banh Mi (pronounced “bon me”).

Banh Mi is not your typical sub sandwich. A Banh Mi sandwich begins with a freshly baked crispy baguette. A portion of the inside of the baguette is removed to make room for fresh cilantro, sweet pickled carrots and daikon radish; your choice of pork, beef, chicken or tofu; sliced cucumbers, spicy jalapenos – thinly sliced, lettuce, and a mayonnaise spread.

You can choose from the following Banh Mi options: BBQ Lemongrass pork, Korean Beef and Garlic Beef (both served warm), Curry Chicken, Lemongrass tofu, Vietnamese traditional – pork cake, jambon (smoked pork) and pate, scrambled eggs, vegetarian (avocado and veggies), and grilled pork patties. Sandwiches range in price from $4.75 - $6.50.

Pho is a Vietnamese noodle soup made with broth, rice noodles (gluten free) called banh pho, herbs, and meat. At Pho Banh pho noodle soups are available with rare or cooked beef, meat balls, beef brisket + rare beef, chicken pho and the house special – tripe, meatballs, brisket and rare beef.

(Photo, right: Pho Banh - a welcoming, contemporary interior).

Also popular at Pho Banh are their rice dishes, egg and spring rolls, and rice noodle salad dishes. Rice dishes include BBQ pork and shredded pork with roasted rice powder, Korean beef (with kimchi and tomato), and sunny side up eggs and grilled pork (pictured at bottom of article).

“You can come here and have lunch for under $8 – real meat, real food,” said Minh. “Our food is healthy for you, with vegetables, and we minimize the oil."

Minh (pictured above, taking customer orders) is no stranger to the restaurant business, having worked as a chef and manager at Tepanyaki for 10 years, and also managing the Last Samurai in Park City and downtown Salt Lake City. Being his first business, it seemed only natural that he would want to share the cuisine of his home country.

“I want everyone to try Vietnamese food!” Minh said.

Pho Banh also makes fresh blended smoothies – made with fresh fruit and Boba (according to Minh, Boba takes 2 hours to make, and is a form of tapioca): strawberry, avocado, pineapple, and mango, as well as “very strong and awesome” iced coffee, and sweet Thai iced tea/Boba.

Pho Banh is open Monday through Thursday, 10am – 8pm; Friday and Saturday, 10am – 8:30pm; and Sunday, 11am – 6pm. Pho Banh offers a 10% military discount, and offers daily specials. Visit them this week, and share your review!
(Note: due to trademark considerations, effective July 12, 2016, Pho Banh changed their name from Hot Banh to Pho Banh).

News You Can Use

Blue Stakes

Clearfield City Public Works would like to clarify with residents the City's Blue Stakes responsibility: the City marks the sewer water and storm drain, and does not mark past the water meter to the home. The City's responsibility is from the street to the water meter. Please contact Dan Schuler, Clearfield City Public Works Inspector/Storm Water Manager/Fleet Superintendent, at 801.525.4404 if you have questions.

Storm Water Information

We all need to work together to ensure that pollutants and illicit discharges (any non-storm water discharge) are not entering into our storm water system. Only storm water should go down the storm water drain!
  • Remember to sweep and collect dirt, soil and garbage from garages, driveways, pavement areas and gutters, and dispose into trash bins.  By sweeping up debris and using cleaning methods, such as wiping down equipment with cloths, rather than hosing down areas, you conserve water and help prevent pollutants from going down the storm drains.
  • If a spill occurs such as gasoline, oil, grease, or paint, utilize absorbents such as kitty litter to soak up wet spills and remember to properly dispose of absorbent materials.
  • When washing your vehicle it should be done on your lawn or at a commercial car cleaning site (car wash).
It is illegal to discharge or cause a discharge into the storm drain system or watercourse any material including, but not limited to, pollutants or waters containing any pollutants, that cause or contribute to a violation of applicable water quality standards other than storm water.  Pollutants include, but are not limited to, oil, grease, gasoline, anti-freeze, dirt or sediment, fertilizer, paint, solvents, pet waste, chlorinated swimming pool water, herbicides, pesticides and grass clippings.
To report an Illicit Discharge - that is, any non-storm water discharge into the storm water system, or for questions and concerns on disposing of pollutants, please contact Dan Schuler, Public Works Inspector/Storm Water Manager/Fleet Superintendent, at 801-525-4404 or  801-940-2078 (cell), or by email. There is a 24-hour hotline to report spills or illegal dumping: 801-525-2806.

Working together we can make a difference!

Weber Basin Water - H2Oath

The Utah Division of Water Resources (DWRe) launched a water conservation campaign called “H2Oath: Utah’s Water-Wise Pledge” to encourage additional water conservation efforts by families, businesses, cities, government agencies and statewide organizations. It can be found here or a more mobile-friendly website

The H2Oath is designed to commit individuals and groups to conserve more by following the division’s Weekly Lawn Watering Guide (found on Slow the Flow, and posted weekly via the division's Facebook and Twitter accounts) throughout the irrigation season. It also encourages committing to several other water conservation actions. Governor Herbert showed his support, officially declaring May 10, 2016 "H2Oath: Utah's Water-Wise Pledge Day."

Hundreds of people and organizations have taken the H2Oath. The division encourages people to take the pledge, and show support by asking their family, friends, customers, employees and constituents to do the same.

Through the Eyes of a Clearfield City Parks & Recreation Commissioner

Kiwanis Park

(Kiwanis Park has some of the largest pine trees in the city - the playground can be seen through the trees).

Each of the Parks and Recreation Commission members has written a 'review' of one of the 17 parks in Clearfield. The following information was provided by Parks Commission Chairperson, Paul Taylor about Kiwanis Park:

"I have a close connection to this park. When I was a young boy I helped my father, who was a member of the Kiwanis Club, plant the pine trees in the park. I had no clue I would be the Parks Commissioner for this park 50 years later!

"Kiwanis Park is located on 300 North and Vine Street. Amenities include a baseball diamond with seating, tennis courts, basketball court, horseshoe pits, a playground, and restrooms. There is a medium-sized pavilion that can accommodate up to fifty people, as well as several small pavilions with barbecue grills, and an off-street parking lot. With the park being four-acres, there is a lot of open space for the kids and dogs to run and play. And, it has some of the largest pine trees in the city, providing lots of shade"  - thanks to the Kiwanis Club!

The mid-sized picnic pavilion (pictured) seats up to 50 people and can be reserved by contacting Clearfield Community Services at 801.525.2790.

Ask An Arborist - Tyler Hill

Pruning in the Fall

As fall is upon us it’s time to leave the pruning tools in the shed and enjoy the fall colors on your trees.

Because decay fungi spread their spores profusely in the fall, and healing of cut wounds seems to be slower as the tree prepares itself for winter, it's best to not prune our trees through the fall as they lose their leaves.  It is best to wait until the tree is in dormancy (alive but not actively growing) which is in the winter. It is usually best to wait until the coldest part of winter has passed.  There are a few species, such as maple, walnuts and birches that may “bleed”- meaning, when the sap begins to flow.  This is not harmful and will cease when the tree leafs out.

Dormancy is the most common practice - it results in a vigorous burst of new growth in the spring and should be used if that is the desired effect.  Sit back and enjoy the wonderful colors of our trees.

“Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you.”- Frank Lloyd Wright

Clearfield City is fortunate to have a City Arborist on staff. Simply email your question to tyler.hill@clearfieldcity.org with the words "Ask an Arborist" in the comment line. Tyler will respond to your questions/comments as space allows. If you don't have regular access to a computer you may call your questions/comments in to the city receptionist at 801.525.2700.  Questions/comments will remain anonymous.
