Delivering the best world for animals

Hi <<First Name>>

We have an amazing story to share with you about a blind cat who has found his way with another feline friend.

Our campaign to end rodeo cruelty in New Zealand continues as a new survey shows that most Kiwis would support a ban.

Thanks to our national food sponsor, you have the chance to win a GoPro HERO4, plus a year's supply of Purina pet food. There are quarterly prizes to be won so be in quick for more chances to WIN.

This month, we are also delighted to welcome a new egg distributor to our SPCA Blue Tick accreditation.

Keep reading to find out how you can help deliver the best world for animals.
Survey shows many Kiwis support rodeo ban

Survey shows many Kiwis support a ban on rodeo

Our ongoing campaign to ban rodeos in New Zealand is very much in tune with public opinion, according to a new survey.

Two thirds of New Zealanders agree that it is not worth causing pain and suffering to animals for the sake of entertainment. But this is exactly what rodeo entails.

“It’s great to see more evidence that most New Zealanders agree with our stance on rodeos and would like to see them completely banned,” said Ric Odom, SPCA New Zealand CEO.

Our petition to ban rodeo in New Zealand is currently being considered by the Government's Primary Production Committee.
Newborn puppies dumped near SPCA gates

Newborn puppies dumped outside SPCA Otago gates

SPCA Otago are appealing to the public for information after five newborn puppies were dumped in a cat cage outside their centre two weeks ago.

The American bulldogs were only about a week old – far too young to be without their mother. Puppies need to remain with their mother for at least eight weeks.

SPCA Inspector Sophia Tinirau adds that the mother is likely to be distressed and in pain with “a lot of milk coming through that isn't going anywhere.”

Abandoning an animal is an offence. If you have any information that can help find the person responsible, please contact SPCA Otago on (03) 473 8252.
The blind cat and his guide cat

The blind cat and his guide cat

Little Murdock arrived at the SPCA Wellington hospital in quite a state – both of his eyes appeared to have ruptured or collapsed.

Sadly, his eyes had to be removed. But with lots of love and care, Murdock started making big steps towards recovery. He went out to foster with an SPCA vet nurse, along with another kitten, Mabel.

The two kittens became inseparable. Mabel would guide Murdock with her scent to show him where the food and litter box lived, and lick those hard-to-reach places to keep her best friend clean.

Once Murdock had recovered, he and Mabel went up for adoption at the SPCA and found a forever home together with their new owner, Shar. You can see them in action in a great story on Breakfast.
Making life less lonely for the elderly

Making life less lonely for the elderly

Recent international evidence shows that loneliness can significantly impact on an individual's heath.

As part of the Outreach Therapy Pets programme run by the SPCA and St John, animals like Sophie are helping to reduce the stress and fears that can come with illness and age.

Thanks to our supporters, we now have more than 300 volunteers and their companion animals bringing comfort and joy to residents of rest homes and hospitals.

Adopt Chloe or Zoe today

Chloe and Zoe seeking new families

When sisters Chloe and Zoe arrived at SPCA Tauranga a few months ago, the centre was completely full.

They went out to an SPCA Foster home, where they could get the love and care they needed until they were able to find their forever homes.

Now back at the SPCA, they're looking for families where they will get lots of attention. Chloe and Zoe love to run, play and explore, so big yards would be ideal.

If you can give one (or both!) of these ladies a home, give SPCA Tauranga a call on 027 593 9191.
Leave a legacy

Leave a gift to New Zealand's animals

This week is Include a Charity Week, which aims to encourage more New Zealanders to include a charitable gift in their will.

Many people don’t realise that these gifts, big and small, are our largest source of funding. They literally save the lives of countless animals every year.

By leaving a gift in your will to SPCA New Zealand, you can help to ensure that our work for the animals can continue for generations to come.
