"Our WW1 Hospital exhibition was launched in style in June. Loaned festoons of crocheted poppies adorned the exhibition space, The Natural Theatre Company attended in character as a nurse and wounded soldier and a Bugler played a moving rendition of the Last Post. The event and tea, served with 100 cupcakes (kindly donated by RUH Lansdown Restaurant) was attended by the Right Honourable Mayor of Bath Cllr. Paul Crossley.
Over the months of June and July we also held two talks with historians Professor Francis Duck and Andrew Swift, who both gave fascinating presentations on some ground breaking medical services offered at the War Hospital as well as many amazing stories of compassion and care provided by the community; the title of our exhibition “Acts of Kindness Make a Difference” really held true. Many were involved in this project and I would like to thank everyone for their time, expertise and dedication to creating this permanent legacy.

Art at the Heart receive a highly commended award!
Art at the Heart have received recognition from the Arts and Health South West Prize 2016 for their Fusion Exhibition, a project that took place at the RUH last summer.
This was an inaugural project for the hospital and we were very pleased with the final exhibition that went beyond the usual boundaries of the central gallery and resulted in installations of 3D works displayed inside and outside the hospital as well as an audio visual displayed in a hospital waiting room.
The project won Highly Commended in the Arts & Health South West Prize 2016 and the arts team attended the awards ceremony at the Arnolfini in Bristol.

Introducing the new
RUH ART MAP!
A major project this year has been to design a new art map so that RUH patients, visitors and staff can locate exhibitions, artworks and sculptures in courtyards around the site. Two students from Bath Spa University have worked on this project and it was managed by the arts team.
The idea is to indicate the many locations of exhibits around the hospital, and for it to offer a welcome distraction. Bath Spa Arts Management (MA) student, Mao Takata has completed a 7 month work placement with Art at the Heart. We wanted the art map to be a work of art in its own right, and Mao introduced (BA) Textiles Student; Ayane Fujioka to the project who screen printed the corridors on fabric to create the outline of the map and stitched where the art exhibitions, sculptures and individual artworks are located.

The Zone colours are coherent with the colour scheme used in the official RUH map: Zone A - purple, Zone B - green, Zone C - yellow and Zone D - blue.
This Textile piece has then gone through a digital process to produce a printed arts map that will be on display throughout the hospital. It highlights certain way-finding features including the Friends Coffee Shop.
"The arts map provides a real asset to enable staff and visitors to explore and discover all the artworks on display at the RUH.” Tony Smith, Exhibitions Manager

pARTicipate - Stitch in Time workshops
Stitch in Time has had a quiet time over summer. Averagely we have worked with 2 or 3 patients each session as opposed to our normal 7 or 8. The low numbers have not diminished the quality of experience; in fact we have been able to spend time individually with patients encouraging engagement in the activities and the telling of their stories. In telling their stories, patients often visibly relax, they take great pleasure in their recollections and we have witnessed many animated conversations around the table.
With the patients permission we scribe key moments from the stories on the sheet of acetate laid on the table. We now have many sheets, layer upon layer of memories. It has been a great privilege to be part of this sharing.

Edwina Bridgeman
