News Round-Up: September 1st
The NHS Health and Care Innovation Expo 2016 takes place next week. This event will see thousands of delegates from across the country attending talks, seminars and workshops at Manchester Central.

GM AHSN has been the lead partner in planning and organising the Health Innovation Manchester stand, representing a total of 12 organisations from across Greater Manchester. You can find us at stand 82. We will also be presenting at Pop-Up University sessions on both days, showcasing our work on Atrial Fibrillation and our support for the Salford Lung Study. Click here to view a full calendar of our activities.

We will also be participating as part of the National AHSN stand (stand 50), which this year features an ‘Innovator Zone’ – an opportunity to meet some of the most forward thinking SMEs from across the country. Two GM-based SMEs: Zilico and Slo Drinks, are exhibiting on the stand, and will be helping us to demonstrate the diversity of medical innovation coming out of this region.

We hope and expect that 2016 will be the biggest and most successful NHS Expo to date – and we look forward to welcoming our members and partners to the event.

Next Steps for End-of-Life Research

GM AHSN delivery partners, NIHR CLAHRC Greater Manchester have recently published a report on end-of-life priority setting for Greater Manchester.

The report, which was produced in collaboration with Bury Carers Centre, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and South Cumbria Strategic Clinical Networks, Manchester Carers Forum, Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and University Hospitals of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust; aims to shed some light on a largely under-researched area. It sets out the research priorities in Greater Manchester within the scope of national research priorities.

Greater Manchester Academic Health Science Network leading growing the community from May 2017

Q is an initiative connecting people with improvement expertise across the UK. Through Q people are coming together to form a community - sharing ideas, enhancing skills and collaborating on improvement projects.

Greater Manchester Academic Health Science Network has had an active role in the development of the Q initiative since its inception as ‘5,000 Safety Fellows’. After feeding into the initial design, we helped to recruit founding members to the community who helped co-design and test the initiative during 2015.

The Q community is made of up a diverse range of people including those at the front line of health and social care, patient leaders, managers, researchers, policymakers and others.

The community is growing – over the coming years it is envisaged Q will become a community of thousands of people.

To ensure the community is grown in a manageable way, and to enable the members to contribute to its evolving shape and design, opportunities to join Q are being phased throughout different parts of the UK.

We are continuing to support Q and helping to grow the community in Greater Manchester, as well as supporting and delivering activities and opportunities for members.

Opportunities for people in the region will be open from May 2017. We will be looking for those with commitment to, knowledge of and experience in collaborative improvement.

Corporation Pop and Lucid Group Limited secure Pitch to TITCH innovation funding to work with NHS to improve care for sick children

The funding will be used to drive forward the development of: a virtual guide to reduce anxiety for children visiting hospital; and a new device aimed at improving diagnosis and treatment for children suffering from faecal incontinence.

Provided by GM AHSN and Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT), the Pitch to TITCH innovation fund enables industry:NHS collaborators to develop solutions to unmet clinical needs affecting paediatric patients.

TITCH (Technology Innovation Transforming Child Health) is a national consortium, in conjunction with Devices for Dignity, developed to address the problems associated with the niche and often neglected market for technology in the field of child health.

The two selected innovators are:
Corporation Pop, awarded £19,500 to develop a prototype of a patient virtual guide.
Lucid Group Limited, awarded £14,700 to finance a paediatric faecal incontinence diagnostic feasibility investigation.

The funding call, which was launched following a successful workshop event back in March, is operated by TRUSTECH, the North West Innovation Service, and supported by the CMFT Charity.
