Collaboration with colleagues to plan and reflect on instruction is an essential part of successful implementation of a high quality math program.

Featured Resource

Multilingual Glossary

We are excited to announce that the Multilingual Math Glossary is now online! The glossary, which will be continually updated, includes math-specific terms as well as general terms that are found within the SFUSD Math Core Curriculum. You can access it through the link above, or on the sfusdmath.org website within the Curriculum Resources tab: www.sfusdmath.org/multilingual-glossary.html.

Please spread the word! We look forward to building on this work with your help, and supporting teachers with target language instruction in mathematics for all SFUSD students. All feedback on the document (such as terminology, translation choices, and usability) should be sent to Glenn Kenyon.

Upcoming Math Professional Development

MISTs (Math Instructional Support Teachers)

This year, we are fortunate to have a cadre of PK-5 teachers who are taking a district-wide leadership role in providing math professional learning, supporting SFUSD teachers in the implementation of the SFUSD Math Core Curriculum at their grade level. The Math Department and National Board Support Program are providing ongoing professional learning to these teachers on strategies for engaging all students, planning at a deep level using the SFUSD Math Core Curriculum, and building understanding of the content standards for mathematics.

Come plan with your grade level colleagues on September 29.

Teacher Leader Learning Strands

The first PD follow ups to the Summer Institute are coming in October and November. Teacher Leaders from K-8 schools will be gathering by learning strand. The first of these dates is Heterogeneous Instruction on October 5 and October 19.To see a complete list of dates for your school site click here.

As a reminder, your homework was to implement a lesson using the 5 Practices and a strategy from your learning strand. Please reflect on this process before our next meeting by completing this Learning Strand Strategy Reflection.

Thank you!
For more information, contact your Math Department liaison.

Core Curriculum News

Our SFUSD Math Core Curriculum has undergone another round of revision based on feedback from teachers all across the district. The teacher binder for each course contains information on the changes and a suggested timeline for the first semester units, including the dates for the IDA.
This year, we will be printing and delivering the curriculum in two batches: one that you have already received and a second in December. If you have any questions about Curriculum delivery, please contact Noam Szoke http://szoken@sfusd.edu.

Recent Activities

We had the opportunity to work with many math teachers before the beginning of the school year. A number of Teacher Leaders from Elementary and K-8 Schools met for a two-day Summer Institute to launch the school year. Teacher Leaders improved their content knowledge of Operations and Algebraic Thinking, launched their learning strand, and planned with grade-level colleagues.

Thank you for all that you do!
