Letter from the President

Letting kids take the lead when it comes to play

Dear Friend,

Recently, I have received a series of wonderful invitations from my two-year-old son, Bennett. “Come play with me, daddy,” he says each morning just after waking up. “What would you like to play,” I ask. While he frequently wants us to build trains together using his Duplo Lego bricks, he sometimes insists that we both wear hand puppets and pretend that they are eating “cake” (which is actually a collection of wooden blocks). Other times, he wants to play “chase” where either I chase him or he chases me around the kitchen table. I’m amazed at the diversity of activities that he, and certainly other kids I see at the Children’s Museum, define as play.

Child Life Services at Stony Brook Hospital

Speaking with Brooke Rose, Child Life Specialist

The Children’s Museum of the East End recently partnered with the Child Life Services Department at Stony Brook Children's Hospital to offer weekly programming for kids who have been hospitalized or are undergoing treatment. Stony Brook is the only hospital offering dedicated pediatric care in Eastern Long Island.

An integral part of the hospital experience, Child Life Services is dedicated to helping children and their families feel comfortable during inpatient stays and outpatient visits. We recently spoke with Brooke Rose, one of Stony Brook’s Certified Child Life Specialists, about the vital role Child Life Services plays during their hospital visits.

Inspiring a lifelong love of music

Marlene Markard, Musikgaten teacher and professional musician

This fall, the Museum is thrilled to host Musikgarten: Dance With Me, a 12-week class designed to instill a lifelong love of music and provide a foundation for success in the classroom and beyond. Led by Marlene Markard, a professional musician and certified music teacher, Musikgarten promises to offer families the opportunity to experience one the the world’s leading childhood education programs in a setting that’s both comfortable and engaging. We recently spoke with Marlene about her background, the benefits of learning music at an early age, and the role parents play in the success of the program.

We’ll also sing songs from different cultures around the globe and make apple crafts to welcome the start of fall!

Getting the word out about the Children's Museum

Speaking with Paul A. Johnson, the Museum's Marketing Coordinator

If you've ever opened an e-mail from the Museum, taken home a flyer after visiting, received a letter with the CMEE logo on it, or followed us Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, there's a good chance that Paul A. Johnson has had a hand in it. Since joining the Museum in 2014, he's been heading up the Museum's marketing efforts. And, while his official title of "Marketing Coordinator," he'll be the first to admit that his role is hard to define.
