Former Cal State Los Angeles AD Garrett has been accused of sexual harassment in a lawsuit filed earlier this week. According to Senior Assoc AD Hudson, Garrett, in addition to using objectifying language toward female employees, detained her in an office in an effort to force her to reveal the names of employees who complained. Hudson also claims in the suit that Cal State LA violated job opening requirements by not allowing others to apply for the AD position. Hudson: "When I first brought forth my concerns about harassment and gender discrimination, I did so alone and quietly, using the University's internal processes. But it quickly became clear to me that these disturbing and discriminatory practices would continue as long as this remained behind closed doors. I believe the best way to bring about positive change is to stand up and speak the truth out loud, even if you're afraid. That's what I'm doing now." Attorneys for Cal State LA characterize the lawsuit as a "reckless compilation of exaggerations and fabrications" which they vow to "repudiate with facts." - link
CIAA Commish McWilliams welcomes conference members and fans by looking ahead to the upcoming season and explains what advice she would give to CIAA coaches: "They have a rare responsibility. They're beyond the Xs and Os of the game. They're parents, sometimes doctors, counselors, academic counselors. I would tell coaches to share in that moment with the rest of your coaches. Provide leadership that demonstrates that the student-athletes will see you in a role of influence, and they'll either want to be like you or aspire to do more than you." McWilliams also discusses the importance of fan and alumni engagement, whether through social and digital media, or in-person. "If you're a true fan of the game or your institution then come support the student-athletes -- and remember that they're human...at the end of the day they're just people, and they want to play their game, and I don' think any of them want to lose." McWiliams finishes by saying she believes the CIAA has advanced to a position where others respect them "not just as HBCUs, but as a great place of higher education and athletic excellence." - link
During an examination of the doing “more with less” narrative recently espoused by MEAC (DI) Commish Thomas, HBCU Digest Founding Editor Carter asks: "why should any HBCU compete at the Division I level of the NCAA?" Citing HBCUs lack of competing for national titles and finishing near the bottom of APR results in DI, along with strong SIAC and CIAA FB attendance and the popularity of the CIAA hoops tourney, Carter concludes answering his own question by stating: "If we can compete and fans are paying attention at a more affordable, less problematic level of college competition, staying in DI isn’t going to help us become a stronger collection of conferences." - link
During a public forum at Alaska Fairbanks to discuss previously noted athletics restructuring options presented in the state system's Strategic Pathways Initiative, "none of which are remotely acceptable," former state senator and UAF supporter Wilken also calls athletics' impact on the system's overall budget "a little more than a rounding error" and asserts it woud be a mistake to assume that community support for UAF and UAA would continue with reduction or elimination of athletics. Citing student-athletes from small towns being given the opportunity to attend school and compete, former UAF WBB HC Darnall made a more emotional plea to Prez Johnsen, asking "what is the value of dreams of our youth and their hopes for a future? What is that value at UAF?" Johnsen's response: "Invaluable." - link
More details released about the fitness testing which Texas Woman's officials believe contributed to, if not directly caused, eight VB players to be hospitalized with rhabomyolysis. Instead of holding the fitness tests the day players reported back to campus, the regimen was spread out over the first week. During the week, players were given a number of reps to complete within a period of time, as opposed to previous years, wherein student-athletes were given a time limit to complete as many reps as they could; the exercises themselves were the same. In addition to the fitness testing, players scrimmaged during the day one day of the week on which there was no testing and participated in a morning practice the day after testing concluded. All eight players have now been released from the hospital. Per VP for Student Life Mendez-Grant: "Although the investigation remains underway, Texas Woman's University's initial belief is that overexertion coupled with dehydration during practices last week caused these student-athletes to experience rhabdomyolysis." - link
