Rick Bryson, Candidate for US House NC-11

Rick Bryson calls press conference
to address congressional ethics scandal
September 6 at 12:30 pm

Union Hall, 45 Sardis Road, Asheville, NC

Asheville, NC, September 1, 2016—Mountain Democratic candidate for the NC 11th District congressional seat, Rick Bryson, has called a major press conference to speak to the brewing scandal that hangs over the 11th congressional office, currently held by Mark Meadows.

“The independent Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) has ruled that the present congressman’s conduct in office has broken congressional ethics standards,” noted Bryson.

The story broke a year ago: Chief of staff of Rep. Mark Meadows’ office, Kenny West, was accused of sexually harassing women in his office, with three testifying to the OCE to that affect. In November of last year, West was told to leave both the Washington and Hendersonville, NC, offices. Later, when he attempted entry, he was barred by a female office worker who threatened to have him arrested.

Compounding the ethics problem is that Meadows continued to pay West as chief of staff for ten months, even though this is a clear violation of the Congressional Ethics Manual, and a misuse of public funds.

What is new on this story is how Meadows has attempted to stonewall the investigation. Instead of cooperating with the independent OCE, he has chosen to deal only with the House Ethics Committee which is made up of his cronies.

“So what we have here is both a misuse of public funds and a working environment in which women are unsafe—and a congressman who is bent on obscuring the facts,” stated Bryson.

In the press conference, Bryson will pose the questions that Meadows chose not to bring up at his recent public appearances. “Just as we had a right to know what was going on with Nixon during the Watergate scandal, we have a right to know what is going on during Meadowsgate.”

The press conference will be held at 12:30 pm on September 6, 2016, at the Union Hall, 45 Sardis Road, Asheville, NC.

Meet all the candidates for four seats
on the nonpartisan Henderson County School Board.
They also will attend this event.

VOLUNTEER UPDATE

WOMEN DEMOCRATS ASK FOR YOUR HELP WITH GRAB BAGS. The Annual Women Democrats Luncheon is their big fundraiser, and they support a portion of our Headquarters rent with the money earned. They ask that you bring "grab bag items" valued up to $10 and leave them in the collection box next to the desk at HQ. They can be placed in a small decorative bag or not as giver's choice. These grab bags are sold for $1 at the luncheon. Their exciting theme this year is "Empowerment - Every Woman's Journey" with Maureen Copelof, candidate for NC House, District 113, as the main speaker! Watch for details, and buy tickets at HQ anytime.

THANKS TO ALL THE NEW VOLUNTEERS coming aboard. Many of them have already come to an orientation meeting in the last week and there are more meetings to come as soon as possible.  Many hands make light the work; we are so grateful for the amazing variety of skills and interests! In the next eNews we will be welcoming two, not one, but two, new Co-Office Managers!

THE EVENT TEAM held it's meeting in a new time slot Wednesday at 3:30 Aug. 24. Watch for next meeting time after the Apple Festival is over. We are planning for the Latino Festival (Sep),  Farm City Day (Oct) , a "different" Chili CookOff Victory Celebration (Nov) , and the Holiday Party (Dec). Join us! Thanks to Chris Kruse "Sergeant Rock", our DJ, the HCDP is the recipient of a "Block Rocker" unit to play music in a variety of settings outdoors and indoors and a chargeable waistband unit with lapel mic, which allows a person to be heard easily when delivering remarks to an audience. THANK YOU CHRIS for your generosity and expertise--much appreciated!

PHONE BANK FOR HILLARY! Sara Riordan, our Henderson County representative for the NC Hillary Campaign, will be phone banking every Tuesday evening at HQ from 5 to 8 pm. The Blue Apple Contribution Drive Gets a Huge Boost!
Thanks to the creative, energetic work of Charles Medd and Lee Luebbe of the Blue Apple Contribution Drive Fund Raising Team and joined by Clay Eddleman and Bob Livingston, the Etowah Smokehouse played host to 95 Democrat/Unaffiliated folks for a great southern buffet to raise more funds for the Blue Apple Contribution Drive! About 15 more bought tickets and couldn't attend. All the giving netted the us about $4,000! Wow! Thank you all! A variety of "personalities" and candidates spoke briefly and fired up the crowd. It was fun being together, sharing good talk and good food, and getting into the campaign mood. As Clay led us in a final cry "Stronger Together," the energy in the room was palpable.

Remember, giving what you can is all we ask of each other - time, talent, and treasure. If you have not yet contributed for 2016, a one-time gift is welcome as we prepare to send out mailings to our constituency all over the county and visit them with campaign materials. We are heartened by the volunteers coming in the door to help!
