7 September 2016

Tena koutou katoa, greetings.

WOW!!!  What an impressive and professional performance our children had the privilege to be part of last Thursday at the 'Kids for Kids' performance.  I sometimes wonder if the choices of the songs are made to make us adults reminisce of our younger times and give us songs that we will want to sing along with!  Jackie Clarke (polyester and all!!) does a wonderful job of making this 'about the kids' and it was neat to watch the faces of all of our children as they were actively involved. A special mention to Katy Tyrell (Ukulele group), Cassidhe Harrop (duet) and Ella Cochrane (group), who were all selected to take part in additional parts of the performance.  Of course it is all for a great cause too and it is important for our children to understand the impact that they can have through the likes of this World Vision concert.

A reminder that tomorrow (Thursday), is the NZEI and PPTA Paid Union meeting in Oamaru.  We are only running with a skeleton staff, and will just be expecting those children at 9am who we have been told to expect.  The buses will run 2 1/2 hours later than usual, for an 11.30 'school as normal' start.  I appreciate that this does cause disruption for many of you, and we are grateful of your support.  As I outlined in last week's newsletter, the issues are significant, with potential negative effects on ALL of our children.

Our Year 8s continue to be involved in the Rural School's programme and are heading to Papakaio on Friday for a Career's Day.  These are wonderful opportunities to create connections with more children of the same age.  Last Thursday Mrs Jepson and I attended a day in Oamaru with all the Secondary schools, and most of the Primary schools, with a focus on ensuring that we can transition all of our children as successfully as possible to their respective High Schools.  While this day didn't of course include schools outside of North Otago there was a lot that we have been able to take away in order to support students going both near and far.  Part of the day included hearing back from Yr 9 students about what helped them settle at High School this year - and the Year 8 Rural Schools' Days were high on the list for all of these students, as being something that helped them to mix with people outside of their own school.

Mrs Peters and I will be holding another Whanau Hui with the whanau of our Maori children early in Term 4.  Letters will come out in Week 1 as a reminder, but if this applies to you - please put Wednesday 19th October - 3.15pm into your diary.  We have some exciting things planned for our whole school that we are looking forward to implementing.

Have a great week
There are still a number of Oral Consent forms outstanding. These are now very overdue and if they are not returned it will result in your child/ren missing out on an appointment this year. If you require another form - please contact the school office.

SAUSAGE SIZZLE
Thursday.
$2 per sausage
$2 per muffin
(GF Sausages available)
A reminder that there are no heated lunches on a Thursday

SCHOOL VISION FEEDBACK
Thank you to those of you who provided feedback re our School Vision.  The above diagram shows your answers to the first question about values, and it is interesting to see that there are some values that are clearly seen as the priority in our school by you as parents.  As we look to develop our Vision and revisit our School Charter as a result, we will continue to keep you informed.
Our lucky winner for the Spot Prize is Denise Cochrane.
KIDS FOR KIDS
Cash for Communities is a partnership between PGG Wrightson and Balance Agri-Nutrients, which has a goal of raising funds for rural schools and community organisations throughout New Zealand. The programme has raised more than $425,000 over the past six seasons, and over 1,600 farmers registered last year.

This spring, PGG Wrightson and Balance Agri-Nutrients will again run the Cash for Communities programme and give farmers another opportunity to raise funds for their local school, St John, Rescue Helicopter or other listed community club or group.

The programme will run between the 1st September and 30th November 2016. PGG Wrightson will donate $1 for every tonne of qualifying Balance Agri-Nutrients fertilser (excluding Lime,Gypsum and Hatuma) by farmers who have registered at www.cashforcommunities.co.nz.
We raised a fantastic total of $108.20 for the Cancer Society from the Daffodil Day merchandise.
Thank you to all the families that supported this cause and to ANZ for supplying the merchandise.
A note has been given out today to our successful Jump Jam team, regarding the arrangements for the finals in October.  Unfortunately since this has been printed off we have had notification from the company that the event will this year be held at the Lincoln Events Centre.  The accommodation arrangements will stay the same, but we just want families to be aware that there will be a little bit of travel time across the city from the accommodation to the event venue. You are welcome to join us at the planned accommodation, or make your own arrangements elsewhere.
Teachers and Support Staff will be attending a Paid Union Meeting in Oamaru from 9am tomorrow.  A reminder that buses will run 2 1/2 hours later than normal.  'Normal' school will resume at 11.30a.
Thank you for your support.
