NewsNotes for Thursday, September 1, 2016

Welcome back! If the first few days of school are any indication, then I expect another fantastic year.

In case you missed my e-mail last week, please be sure to send your child(ren) with a reusable water bottle to keep at school. We have plenty of water stations to fill them as needed.

In this first News Notes edition, I’d like to remind everyone of a few safety practices. Please be sure to read the information below and help us keep Alameda running smoothly and safely.

Parking Reminder

It is illegal and very unsafe to park or stop in any designated no parking/stopping zone around the school even if it is just for a second to drop off or pick up. I have instructed all staff to not release children to parked cars; the classroom teacher must make eye contact with a designated adult who is not sitting in a car. Also, please be mindful of our neighbors’ driveways and avoid blocking them.

Visitors

Portland School District Policy requires that all visitors check in at the office upon entering the building and put on a visitor badge. Alameda staff has been instructed to refer all visitors not wearing a badge to the main office to check in. Even if you are just dropping off a lunch in the classroom, paying for lunch in the cafeteria, picking a student up early etc., you are required to check in at the main office.

Pick up/Drop off

For drop off, all parents and caregivers must either exit the building, or check in at the office at 8:45AM. If you are running late and your child will not get to class by 8:45, you must check him/her in at the office. For pick up, we cannot have anyone waiting on the school playground or anywhere in the building prior to 3:00 PM unless check in procedures have been followed. Even with checking in, we can’t have anyone on the playground prior to 3:00 as Mrs. LeBaron runs PE classes outside daily.

Morning

Please remember to wait outside for the 8:35 bell before entering the building unless it is raining. If it is raining feel free to wait inside the doors but please do not go down to your teacher’s classroom until 8:35 unless you have an appointment with your teacher. Students eating breakfast may come in and eat and either wait in the cafeteria or head straight out the front door if they finish before the bell rings. We also need everyone to leave the playground area when the 8:45 morning bell rings. The playground is not open to the public between 8:45 and 4:00 on school days.

Back-to-School Night

We look forward to seeing everyone at Back-to-School Night on 9/21 for k-2 families and 9/22 for 3-5 for families. There will a short introduction form the PTA and our Foundation in the cafeteria form 6:30-7:00 and then you’ll be in your classrooms from 7:00-8:00.

This year at Alameda, we are trying a few things in an attempt to reduce waste at lunchtime. The typical packed lunch can produce a lot of waste: garbage, recyclables, and food.

Students will scrape food scraps into a separate bin to be recycled (thanks to many parent volunteers!). Uneaten food and most packaging brought from home will be returned in lunchboxes. A waste-free, and a "boomerang" lunch, encourage less disposable packaging and help parents know what food their child is not eating, thus reducing food waste and cost.

Yes, Please!

No, thank you.

Help Our Students and Community: Join the PTA!

Alameda PTA
by Wendy Chou

The Alameda PTA is excited to welcome all returning and new students and families to Alameda School!

We are most fortunate to belong to a community of teachers and families that strive to make Alameda a supportive, nurturing, and intellectually stimulating environment for our children. We would not be able to accomplish this without the involvement of parents working closely with Alameda’s dedicated faculty and staff. Your contributions of time, talents, and treasures enhance our students’ experience in and out of the classroom and we are very grateful for it.

Last year, thanks to the contributions of PTA members, we were able to install a standing desk in every classroom and help budget for extra support for the teachers so that they would be able to participate in training opportunities throughout the year. We also helped the teachers feel appreciated and supported (and well-fed) with refreshments and meals during conferences and Staff Appreciation week.

In order to continue this tradition of involvement and excellence at Alameda, we invite all of you to become members of the PTA and to sign-up for the many volunteer opportunities offered by the PTA throughout the year. Membership dues for the 2016-2017 school year are $25, and are tax-deductible.

This year, the PTA has gone digital and will be using the MySchoolAnywhere platform that is used by thousands of schools across the country. The system will provide a much more organized and efficient way for us to manage memberships and collect information for our PTA school directory. All Alameda families are invited to add their contact information to the directory, although access to the directory will be limited to families who purchase a PTA membership for the 2016-2017 school year. Members can access the directory online using a computer, tablet, or smartphone, and print out records by class or grade.

Instructions to add or update and confirm your family and student information in the online directory were sent home in your student’s back-to-school packet. You can also access the registration/confirmation page by following this link or the following instructions:

  1. Go to join.myschoolanywhere.com
  2. Enter the invitation code: AlamedaSchoolPDX

Once you have added or confirmed your information, you will be taken to our online store, where you can purchase a PTA membership. Access to the online directory will be granted to PTA members starting October 1.

If you have any questions please contact Wendy Chou or Erich Stiefvater at
ptamembership@alamedaschool.org. We look forward to working with Alameda families, staff, and faculty and making this another fantastic school year!

Reading Friends Is Back!

Alameda PTA
by Andrew Trelstad

Calling all reading friends, we need your help. Do you have 30 minutes a week to read with a child? That is enough to be a real benefit to a child and probably the amount of time you spend to drink your coffee. Once a week you can do them at the same time, wahoo!! Pretty exciting, right. Sign up to be a Reading Friend by emailing readingfriends@alamedaschool.org today.

Reading Friends is sponsored by the Alameda PTA and is patterned after Start Making a Reader Today, a program that pairs adult volunteers with students who would benefit from additional one-on-one read-aloud time. Each participant will meet with his/her Reading Friend for half an hour outside the classroom every week throughout the school year.

Reading Friends Orientation will be held in the Alameda Cafeteria on Tuesday, September 21st at 9:00 am. Please come and find out about this great program. It really helps kids and only takes 30 minutes of your time a week. If you have any questions please reach out or come to the Orientation.

Thanks, Andrew
