How to show your Three-ring system you care

Author - Annette O'Neil. Published dropzone.com 4/8/2016

Three-ring systems look pretty tough. They’re made of thick, heavy metal, after all – what could possibly go wrong? Bad news: lots.

The rings are husky little guys, that’s true. However, they depend on the webbing behind them–and the cutaway cables that fasten them in the ready position–in order for them to work. It behooves you to know when and how to maintain the system.

to read on for tips on maintaining your 3-ring system.

Never Give Up!

Skydive Mag, 29 July 2016

The skydive from hell, main & reserve entanglement but he kept fighting and walked away.

This skydiver (not in Oz) had a double malfunction after a suspension line got caught on a tab, on the closing loop tab, causing the main to inflate and immediately go into a dive. When he cut away, his main risers disconnected but the suspension line had become too tight around the tab leaving the main trailing behind. You see the result in this video (don't worry, he's okay!)

Flat Tracking

Author Christy West. Published Skydive Mag, 14 July 2016

Tracking away from other skydivers well is one of the most vital survival skills a skydiver can have. No matter what kind of skydive you do (unless a Mr Bill or a solo) you will  track to achieve horizontal separation from the others before deploying your parachute. Failure to track well and straight can result in collisions with other skydivers as you deploy, with potentially fatal consequences.

You will never know how many incidents you avoided by tracking well – and that’s A-OK.

Not one of us is immune to a collision based on experience or time in the sport; only through good breakoff plans, constant awareness of others around us, and good tracking technique can we reduce our risks of collisions during breakoff and deployment.
