End of winter hello to everyone and welcome to the new people who have just joined our mailing list! In this newsletter you can find information on the Annual General Meeting, winter and spring events, candy order for Christmas and Finnish language courses. If you'd like to read older newsletters, they are now collated on our website.

Vuosikokous / Annual General Meeting

Tervetuloa Suomi-seuran vuosikokoukseen sunnuntaina 25. syyskuuta klo 13. Vuosikokouksessa on tilaisuus kuulla mitä Melbournen Suomi-Seura on vuoden aikana saavuttanut ja valitaan johtokunnan vapautuville paikoille uudet jäsenet (suurin osa nykyisestä johtokunnasta ylläolevassa kuvassa). Kokouksessa käsitellään sääntömääräiset asiat ja johtokunnalle ajoissa jätetyt vuosikokouksessa käsiteltävät asiat. Tilaisuudessa on kahvitarjoilu.

Muun muassa seuraavat roolit tulevat avoimeksi:

Puheenjohtaja (kausi 1 vuotta)
Sihteeri (kausi 1 vuotta)
Rahastonhoitaja (kausi 1 vuotta)
3 jäsentä (kausi 2 vuotta)
2 varajäsentä (kausi 1 vuotta)

Vapaaehtoistoiminta seuran parissa on loistava mahdollisuus oppia uusia taitoja, kehittää olemassaolevia taitoja sekä käyttää niitä suomalaisyhteisön hyväksi. Puhumattakaan mukavien ihmisten seurasta! Ensi vuosi tulee olemaan myös vaiheikas Melbournessa järjestettävien Suomi-Päivien ja Suomen itsenäisyysjuhlavuoden tapahtumien johdosta. Lämpimästi tervetuloa komiteaan!

Lomake, jolla voit nimittää ehdokkaan johtokuntaan ja/tai valtuuttaa jonkun muun äänestämään puolestasi löytyy täältä. Muistathan, että voit äänestää ja tulla valituksi johtokuntapaikoille vain, jos olet nykyinen Suomi-Seuran jäsen. Jäsenmaksuohjeet löytyvät allaolevasta linkistä.

Welcome to the Annual General Meeting at the Finnish Hall on Sunday 25^th of September at 1pm. The AGM is a chance for all members to hear what the Society has achieved this year and to elect some new members to fill the Committee positions that become vacant this year (most of the current Committee members are in the photo above). The meeting includes addressing statutory matters and matters presented on time to the FSM Committee. Coffee is served for meeting participants.

These positions become vacant at the AGM:

Chairperson (1-year term)
Secretary (1-year term)
Treasurer (1-year term)
3 ordinary members (2-year terms)
2 deputy members (1-year terms)

This is a great opportunity to learn new skills, develop existing skills and put them to good use for the benefit of the Finnish community. Not to mention the great people you get to meet! Next year will also be eventful due to the Easter Games being held in Melbourne and the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Finland's independence. Warm welcome to the Committee!

The form with which you can nominate a Committee member and/or give proxy to someone else to vote on your behalf can be found here. Please remember that you can vote and be voted for the Committee only if you are a current FSM member (details via the link below).

Talven ja kevään tapahtumista / About the winter and spring events

Otimme varaslähdön juhannuksen juhlintaan Suomi-talolla sunnuntaina 19.6. noin 100 henkilön voimin. Lounasta edelsi Melbournen suomalaisen luterilaisen seurakunnan johdolla juhannusjumalanpalvelus, jossa sai laulaa Suvivirttä ja muita kesäisiä lauluja. Juhannuskokko (paloturvallinen versio) loimotti taka-alalla tunnelmaa luomassa, kun nautimme perinteiseen tapaan maittavan juhannuslounaan. Saimme myös kuulla Auroran kaunista 38-kielisen kanteleen soittoa. Hän esitti Karjalan Kunnailla kaksi kertaa yleisön toivomuksesta, liikuttaen monet kyyneliin asti. Olemme onnekkaita saadessamme tämän lahjakkaan nuoren naisen vierailulle! Kuvia tapahtumasta voi nähdä täällä.

Heinäkuun puolivälissä järjestettiin biljardikisat, jossa oli mukana parisenkymmentä osallistujaa. Naisten sarjan kärjessä olivat: 1. Talvikki Jumpponen, 2. Cati Jumpponen ja 3. Maire Peltonen. Miesten sarjan voitti Auvo Karjalainen, toisena oli Veikko Fadjukoff ja kolmanneksi sijoittui Harri Jumpponen. Onnittelut voittajille!

We took a head start to Midsummer celebration at the Finnish Hall on 19^th of June with about 100 people. From singing ‘Suvivirsi’ and delicious lunch to kantele music and delightful conversations, Midsummer bonfire (the safe version) acted as a beautiful backdrop. Aurora’s 38-string kantele playing was so beautiful and there were many teary eyes during the emotional rendition of Karjalan Kunnailla, which was even requested as encore. How lucky we are to have this talented young woman visiting Melbourne! Photos of the event here.

In mid-July we organised a billiard competition at the Finnish Hall, with about 20 participants. The winners in the women’s category were 1^st Talvikki Jumpponen, 2^nd Cati Jumpponen, and 3^rd Maire Peltonen. In the men’s 1^st Auvo Karjalainen, 2^nd Veikko Fadjukoff and 3^rd Harri Jumpponen. Congratulations to the winners!

Karkkitilaus jouluksi/ candy order for Christmas

Suomi-kaupan pitäjämme Kaarina pyytää suurempia karkkimääriä jouluksi (joulumarkkinoille) haluavia ottamaan yhteyttä sihteeriin syyskuun puoliväliin mennessä. Näin varmistamme, että meillä riittää makeisia myytäväksi Suomi-talolla vielä joulumarkkinoidemme jälkeenkin (koska teemme tämän karkki- ja muun tuotetilauksen Suomesta vain kerran vuodessa).

Our shop keeper Kaarina would like to inform that anyone who wants to purchase larger quantities of Finnish sweets at the Christmas Bazaar are requested to contact secretary by mid-September. This is to ensure that we will have sufficient stock of candies left after the Christmas Bazaar to be purchased from the Finnish Hall shop
(as we do this order of sweets and other goods from Finland only once a year).

Finnish language courses in the spring

Tarja Papantoniou, a qualified language teacher is responding to the requests of those wanting to learn to speak Finnish by organising three courses this spring. A beginners’ level Finnish course starts on Saturday 1st of October at 2 pm at the Finnish Lutheran Church in Heidelberg. There is also a level 2 course (for those who already have completed the beginner’s course or already know some Finnish) starting on the same day at 3.30 pm at the same location. For more advanced students, Tarja organises a course on Monday evenings starting 26th of September.
