President's Letter

Dear CHMTA members-

I trust you all had a wonderful summer and are looking forward to getting back into your school year groove.  I wouldn't have minded an extra week or so of R&R, but seeing my students again this week has been immensely rewarding.  The "tales of summer" that students share are always entertaining!

2016-17 will be a terrific year with exciting programs, first class venues, and world-class guest artists.  It is with great care and planning that we have organized a full slate of artistic opportunities from which we can all benefit.  Please make sure your students and families are involved and are aware of all that we do as well.  Real community engagement to establish and elevate the artistic culture of the region should always be our mission.

I would love to see you all and let's have an amazing year!

Warmly-
Derison Duarte

Baroque Dance Concert--October 16
CHMTA Presents a program of Baroque Dance
presented by Paige Whitley-Bauguess
Sunday October 16th - Person Hall UNC-CH - 4:00 PM (following the CHMTA Fall Student Recital - 2:00 PM)

Dear CHMTA teachers, students, parents and friends:

Please put this exciting world-class musical event on your calendar!

Take this opportunity to learn about --and see performed in costume with masks-- those historical dance forms that much of our piano repertoire is based upon: minuets, bourees, sarabandes, allemandes, gavottes, chaconnes, and more!  These are dances that were popular in Europe in the 1600 and 1700s and even in America during the time of George Washington and inspired numerous composers such as Bach, Handel, Telemann, Corelli,  Scarlatti, Couperin, Rameau, and later classical composers such as Mozart.   Examples of these dances regularly occur in lesson books, too! --written or adapted by contemporary composers.

The performance will take place in beautiful Person Hall on the UNC-CH campus.

This event is open to all without charge.
