Epping Forest MP Eleanor Laing visits Alder House
Epping Forest MP Eleanor Laing visited the Leonard Cheshire Disability home Alder House in Lambourne Road, Chigwell, following an invitation to coincide with Care Home Open Day.
Mrs Laing was met by the charity's public affairs manager, Peter Hand, and service manager Janet Musama who outlined the work of the home and how it has expanded over the years.
Mrs Laing was taken on a tour of the 22-bed home which provides a range of services for adults with physical disabilities before she held a question and answer session with residents, their relatives, volunteers and staff.
Questions ranged from how long Mrs Laing had been an MP to how she managed to keep MPs quiet in the House of Commons and how many hours she works.
Mrs Laing was also asked if she would be able to help residents in their fight for a pavement to enable them to have wheelchair access to a nearby park, and whether she could do anything to help them in their call for improvement public transport from Manford Way.
Mrs Laing said: "I was delighted to be invited to Alder House and to meet with the staff, residents and volunteers.
"This was not the first time I had visited but it was the first occasion since the home has been renamed Alder House in recognition of a generous legacy from a Mrs Alder which enabled an additional five bedrooms to be built."
Alder House was opened as Three Forests Cheshire Home in 1988.
Initially with 14 bedrooms, the home expanded thanks to Mrs Alder's bequest and since then a further three rooms have been built.
Mrs Laing added: "Not only does Alder House offer wonderful facilities but it also has a fantastic lake in its extensive grounds - a real hidden gem.
"I wish everyone associated with Alder House the very best for the future and wish them well in their endeavours as they start fundraising for a new minibus which will be used to take the residents on outings."
