EUROPEAN FORUM ALPBACH 2016: “TWO PARALLEL REALITIES”
The artist imagines two parallel realities in the way we view the world – the inside and the outside of us. Her work results from attempting intellectually to engage internal images and put them into a context surfacing within the realm of the conscious. Rhythm and repetitive movement are meant to prepare the mind for the connection of the two parallel worlds.

IT’S TIME TO OPEN THE BLACK BOXES! (2012), is a participatory art project initiated by artist Danae Stratou. Living in Greece in a time of multiple crises, it is ever so easy to fall into a state of fear-induced paralysis. This art project was a reaction to such a prospect. The first version of the project took shape and was shown in Athens, in April 2012. The installation comprises 100 aluminum black boxes. They are positioned on the floor equidistant from one another, so as to form a grid. The boxes’ lids are open at an angle. Inside each box a black screen is positioned at a 450 degree angle in relation to the floor. Each time the exhibition takes place, local communities are invited to participate by sending a word as an answer to one of two questions for a period of 1-3 months prior to each exhibition: A) what frightens or threatens them the most, or B) what they believe is in urgent need of protection. In this way, the Black Boxes, when opened in a different city, will reveal local concerns, hopes and fears in a manner which, nevertheless, bind the different cities together.

3. INSTALLATION
LA FÊTE DE L'HUMANITÉ 2016: THE GLOBALISING WALL
The installation will be shown in the large DiEM25 stand. DiEM25 (the pan-European Democracy in Europe movement) will be staging during the Fête debates, artistic performances, and workshops.

THE GLOBALISING WALL, (2012), is a Video Installation by Danae Stratou, based on a text by Yanis Varoufakis. It consists of a freestanding wall depicting, on the one side, a 10’ video created by photographic stills the artist shot in 7 divisions around the world. Cyprus: Green Line, Kosovo: North-South Mitrovica, N. Ireland: Belfast, Ethiopia-Eritrea: Badme, West Bank, Palestine: Wall, Indian-Pakistani Administered Kashmir: Line Of Control, Mexico-Usa: Border Fence, and on the other, a short text by Yanis Varoufakis.
Since 2012 the work has been presented in various forms in Australia, New Zealand, the U.S., Austria, Greece, Portugal and now France.

The Contemporary Austin announces four new outdoor installations currently on view at, or coming soon to, the Betty and Edward Marcus Sculpture Park at Laguna Gloria by artists Terry Allen, Teresa Hubbard / Alexander Birchler, Monika Sosnowska, Danae Stratou, and SUPERFLEX.

ON VIEW FALL 2016
Danae Stratou works within the long tradition of Land art using the earth as her canvas and subtly manipulating the landscape. In Concentric, 2016, a temporary commission for The Contemporary Austin, the water in the tranquil lagoon off the sculpture park's shore becomes the medium in a work that consists of a simple yet poetic gesture of perpetual concentric ripples. The waves simultaneously radiate outward and dissipate, marking rhythmic time through form and movement in what the artist calls "the unifying [but politically charged) element of water." A gentle intervention, the work activates the lagoon in an understated and playful manner.
Danae Stratou explores concepts of time, space, and cosmological systems through sculptures, photographs, installations, and landscape interventions.

DANAE STRATOU, CHASING THE FLOWERS, 2016
Danae Stratou will be presenting new work specifically created for this show. For her project, entitled Chasing the Flowers, Danae Stratou will juxtapose photographs she took of flowers from both Greece and the Netherlands as well as from the Ports of Rotterdam and Pireus.
