Nach Brexit: Green 10 fordern neuen Kurs der EU in Richtung Nachhaltigkeit ein
Nach dem britischen Referendum und im Vorfeld des informellen EU-Gipfels in Bratislava fordern die Green 10 die Präsidenten Tusk, Juncker und Schulz sowie Premierminister Fico in einem Offenen Brief auf, einen neuen Kurs einzuschlagen. Die NFI unterstützt die gemeinsame Forderung, sich an den Leitlinien der Agenda 2030 sowie dem Pariser Klimaabkommen zu orientieren und die Interessen der Menschen und unseres Planeten in den Mittelpunkt zu stellen.
Meinungsumfragen zeigen, dass es für verstärkte Umweltschutzmaßnahmen auf EU-Ebene eine breite Unterstützung gibt. Die Bewältigung der globalen Herausforderungen des Klimawandels, der Zerstörung von Ökosystemen und dem Schutz der Gesundheit der Menschen kann nur gemeinsam gelingen. Weiters muss sich die EU ihrer Grundrechte und der Rechtsstaatlichkeit besinnen, auf denen sie aufgebaut wurde.
Drittens stehen wichtige Entscheidungen bevor, bei denen die EU ihren politischen Willen zeigen und die Lehren aus dem Brexit ziehen muss – etwa bei den Verhandlungen zu CETA und TTIP und bei der Neuorientierung der Politik und des Finanzplans in Richtung einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung. EU-Kohleländer schädigen den ganzen Kontinent
Kohlekraftwerke kennen keine Grenzen — ihre Emissionen in Form von Feinstaubpartikeln und klimaschädlichen Treibhausgasen verschmutzen länderübergreifend. Ein EU-weiter Kohleausstieg würde daher allen BürgerInnen des Kontinents zu Gute kommen. Das ist das Ergebnis einer neuen Studie, die die Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL), WWF, Climate Action Network (CAN) und Sandbag veröffentlicht haben. Auswertungen von 257 der 280 Kraftwerke zeigen, dass die Emissionen aller Kraftwerke für 22.900 vorzeitige Todesfälle, Zehntausende Herz- und Lungenkrankheitsfälle und bis zu 62,3 Milliarden Euro an Gesundheitskosten im Jahr 2013 verantwortlich sind. Die fünf EU-Staaten, die mit schmutzigen Kohlekraftwerken am meisten den Kontinent belasten, sind Polen, dessen Kraftwerke jährlich europaweit 5.830 vorzeitige Todesfälle verursachen, Deutschland mit 4.350 Fällen sowie Großbritannien (2.860), Rumänien (2.170) und Bulgarien (1.570). Internationales Seminar: Wandertourismus — nachhaltig erfolgreich
Unter dem Titel „Hiking Europe“ findet am 27.9. in Barcelona ein internationales Seminar statt, mit dem Ziel, erfolgreiche Konzepte und Produkte eines nachhaltigen Wandertourismus zu entwickeln. Partner im HikingEurope Projekt sind die Regionen Katalonien, Emilia-Romagna, Donegal, Dubrovnik-Neretva, Pirineu Emoció, die Naturfreunde Internationale, NIT Kiel sowie die Universität Girona. Gemeinsam mit ExpertInnen aus ganz Europa (z.B. VertreterInnen des Isländischen Fremdenverkehrsamtes, der Wanderhotels, des finnischen Naturzentrums Haltia, von Europäischen Wanderreiseveranstaltern) werden sie über die Themen Produktentwicklung, Kooperation und Vermarktung/Vertrieb diskutieren und Best-Practice-Beispiele vorstellen. Das Seminar richtet sich an Behörden, MitarbeiterInnen im Destinationsmanagement, Tourismus-Unternehmen in ländlichen Regionen, Reiseveranstalter, NGOs, ForscherInnen usw.

Die Menschheit lebt auf Öko-Pump
Am 8. August war Earth Overshoot Day, der Welterschöpfungstag. Die Menschheit hat bereits sämtliche erneuerbare Rohstoffe und Naturleistungen der Erde aufgebraucht, die innerhalb dieses Jahres bereitgestellt werden können. Allein, um die von den EU-BürgerInnen verbrauchten Agrargüter und Dienstleistungen bereitzustellen, braucht es 269 Millionen Hektar Fläche, wie eine aktuelle Studie von Friends of the Earth zeigt; 40% dieser Fläche – das entspricht der Größe von Frankreich und Italien — liegen außerhalb der EU. After Brexit: Green 10 call for a new EU course towards sustainability
Ahead of an informal EU summit in Bratislava Green 10 sent an Open Letter to President Tusk, President Juncker, President Schulz and Prime Minister Fico on post Brexit development. After the UK referendum vote, the EU now needs to embark on an agenda of transformational change. A change that puts the health and interest of people and planet first in everything it does, guided by the global 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris climate deal. NFI supports the requiry for a new course towards sustainability.
Successive opinion polls have shown that there is broad support for more action on the environment at EU level. Tackling the global challenges of climate change, the depletion of natural resources, the collapse of ecosystems and the protection of people’s health is best done together, rather than in isolation.
Secondly, the EU needs to remember the fundamental rights and the rule of law it was founded on.
Thirdly, in a number of policy areas, important decisions are forthcoming which represent an opportunity to demonstrate the political will to take on board the lessons learned from the UK referendum – that effects the CETA trade agreement and TTIP, a new budget that truly reflects a political re-orientation towards sustainable development and a willingness to increase ambitions when it comes to solving climate change. Coalburning EU countries make their neighbours sick
Coal pollution and its health impacts travel far beyond borders, and a full coal phaseout in the EU would bring enormous benefits for a ll citizens across the continent. That is according to a new report published today by the Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL), Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe, the WWF European Policy Office and Sandbag.
The report analyses the health impacts from air pollution of all EU coalfired power stations for which data is available (257 out of 280). It reveals that in 2013 their emissions were responsible for over 2 2,900 premature deaths, tens of thousands of cases of illhealth from heart disease to bronchitis, and up to EUR 62.3 billion in health costs. The five EU countries whose coal power plants do the most harm abroad are Poland (causing 4,690 premature deaths abroad); Germany (2,490); Romania (1,660); Bulgaria (1,390) and the UK (1,350). The five EU countries most heavily impacted by coal pollution from neighbouring countries, in addition to that from their own plants are: Germany, Italy, France, Greece and Hungary. International seminar: Turning hiking trails into successful tourism products
27 September in Barcelona is the place for you to be, if you would like to hear and discuss about what it takes to develop successful rural tourism products based on hiking trails in your destination. The focus of the seminar will be to discuss and exchange best practices between the experts and the audience to find promising approaches in hiking tourism. The main topics are: product development, cooperation and commercialization/distribution.
The seminar addresses everybody interested in the topic: public authorities, destination management organizations, private tourism enterprises in rural regions, tour operators, NGOs and researchers etc. The experts on the panels will be an interesting mix of these different stakeholders from all over Europe, consisting of the partners of the HikingEurope project (the regions of Catalonia, Emilia-Romagna, Donegal, Dubrovnik-Neretva, Pirineu Emoció, Nature Friends International, NIT Kiel, University of Girona) plus very interesting external experts (e.g. Prof. Xavier Font, Icelandic Tourist Board, Wanderhotels, The Finnish Nature Centre Haltia, European hiking tour operators). Humanity lives at the expense of the environment
The 8th of August was Earth Overshoot Day. By this day humanity has used up all renewable raw materials and natural benefits of the earth that can be provided within this year. According to a report of Friends of the Earth, in the European Union the amount of land used to satisfy our consumption, solely of agricultural goods and services, amounted to 269 million hectars; almost 40% of this land is outside Europe, an area the size of France and Italy combined. L’après-Brexit : les Green 10 demandent à l’UE s’engager dans la voie de la durabilité
Après le référendum britannique et préalablement au Sommet informel de l’UE à Bratislava, les Green 10demandent dans une lettre ouverte aux Présidents Tusk, Juncker et Schulz ainsi qu’au Premier Ministre Fico de changer de cap. L’IAN soutient cet appel à s’engager pour la mise en œuvre des principes de l’Agenda global 2030 et de l’Accord sur le climat de Paris, et à placer les soucis pour l’homme et la planète au centre de leur intérêt.
Des sondages d’opinion mettent en évidence qu’il y a un large soutien au plan de l’UE pour une protection renforcée de l’environnement. Maîtriser les enjeux globaux du changement climatique, de la destruction d’éco-systèmes et de la santé des populations n’est possible que dans un effort commun. L’UE est aussi appelée à se rappeler ses valeurs fondamentales et les principes de l‘État de droit.
Et troisièmement des décisions importantes sont imminentes, demandant à l’UE de montrer sa volonté politique et de tirer les leçons du Brexit – par exemple dans le contexte des négociations sur le CETA et le TTIP ainsi que lors d’une réorientation de ses politiques et plans financiers, vers le développement durable. Les pays qui exploitent le charbon nuisent à la santé de leurs voisins
Comme la pollution atmosphérique liée au charbon et ses impacts sur la santé ne s’arrêtent pas aux frontières des pays qui l’exploitent, il est impératif que l’ensemble des pays de l’Union européenne renoncent à cette énergie polluante. C’est ce que confirme le rapport réalisé par le WWF, l’Alliance pour la santé et environnement (HEAL), le Réseau action climat Europe (CAN Europe) et Sandbag.
Pour la première fois, ce rapport étudie le déplacement des poussières de charbon émanant des centrales européennes (257 centrales sur 280 – Royaume-Uni inclus) et l’impact sur la santé de la pollution atmosphérique qu’elles entrainent. En 2013, leurs émissions étaient responsables de plus de 22 900 décès prématurés et de dizaines de milliers de problèmes de santé allant des maladies cardiaques aux bronchites. Au total, pour la même année, les coûts sanitaires se sont élevés à plus de 62,3 milliards d’euros.
Les pays de l’Union européenne dont les centrales à charbon ont le plus de répercussions néfastes à l’étranger sont la Pologne (4 690 décès prématurés au-delà de ses frontières), l’Allemagne (2 490), la Roumanie (1 660), la Bulgarie (1 390) et le Royaume-Uni (1 350). Les pays les plus impactés par la pollution issue des centrales présentes sur leur sol ou des centrales de leurs voisins européens sont l’Allemagne, l’Italie, la France, la Grèce et la Hongrie. Séminaire international : Tourisme de randonnée durable
Un séminaire international sur le développement de formules et produits durables prometteurs dans le domaine de la randonnée se tiendra le 27 septembre à Barcelone. Les partenaires au projet « HikingEurope » sont les régions de Catalogne, d’Émilie-Romagne, de Donegal, Dubrovnik-Neretva, Pirineu Emoció, ainsi que l’Internationale des Amis de la Nature, NIT Kiel et l’Université de Gérone. Ils aborderont, avec des spécialistes de toute l’Europe (par exemple des représentant/e/s de l’Office de tourisme islandais, des « Hôtels de randonnée » (Wanderhotels), du Centre de la nature finnois Haltia, de voyagistes européens proposant des voyages de randonnée), le développement de produits, la coopération et la commercialisation/promotion et présenteront des exemples de meilleures pratiques. L’humanité vit aux dépens de l’environnement
Le 8 août a été le Jour du dépassement global (« Overshoot Day »). C’est la date à laquelle l’humanité a consommé toutes les ressources naturelles renouvelables et tous les services de la nature, susceptibles d’être fournis pendant toute l’année. Comme il ressort d’une étude récente des Amis de la Terre, il faut, uniquement pour pouvoir produire les biens et services agricoles demandés par les citoyen/ne/s de l’EU, une superficie de 269 millions d’hectares ; 40% de ces terres — ce qui correspond à la superficie de la France plus l’Italie — se situent en dehors de l’Europe.
