Groundbreaking is tomorrow!


Southern Wesleyan University will break ground for a new four-story living and learning community to be constructed at the Central campus. The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. Aug. 30 at the new residence hall site, located along Wesleyan Drive across from Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center and next to Freedom's Hill Church. Elected and appointed officials at city, county, state and national levels are being invited to take part in the groundbreaking ceremony. All of our SWU community are encouraged to attend this historic event!

SWU to participate in NC-SARA


Southern Wesleyan University has been approved by the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA) as an institutional participant in an initiative that provides oversight to postsecondary distance education. According to Tyler Watts, director of the Center for Teaching Excellence at Southern Wesleyan, participation in NC-SARA will provide significant benefits to online programs the university offers. SWU’s 5th Annual Run2Fall 5K offers a challenging course for all ages. Walkers and runners are welcome to participate in this year’s glow themed event! We are excited to announce that this run will use chip timing for the first time ever, and our course will be marked by USATF standards. Exercise has never been this fun! Chapel Checkers


SWU's Spiritual Life Office needs volunteers from the Central campus to serve as chapel checkers for the Fall 2016 Semester. Four people are needed to help scan in students on Mondays and four people are needed for Wednesdays. Also, four people are wanted to fill in as needed for both Mondays and Wednesdays and on Fridays when there are Preview Day chapels. Another four are wanted to help during special chapel events taking place at times other than the regular chapels. Download this form and send to Fran Finch at ffinch@swu.edu.

Finley McKenna Mason was born Aug. 23 to Amber ('08) and Derrick Mason, weighing 5 lb. 8 oz. and 18 1/2 in. long. Amber is the daughter of Rhonda Bracken, SWU accounts payable clerk.
Melissa Wilcox (’06) received full funding from Michelin North America on her environmental grant proposal, which will benefit education on sustainability and nutrition at Powdersville Elementary School. The $17,000 grant will help make possible expansion of the school’s bee project, as well as development of a raised bed garden.
The garden will support the bee project and provide an opportunity for hands-on learning that has real-life implications in the community.
Blood Drive

The Blood Connection will have its mobile Units outside Folger. All donors must have a picture ID or a donor card. Schedule an appointment now with Nurse Herron or simply walk in. Jessica Rivera, Nurse Practitioner from Baptist Easley, is available by appointment from 8:15 a.m. – 11 a.m. on Monday and Thursdays to see both employees and employee family members. Jessica's Bio:
Rivera is earned her undergraduate degree from Clemson University and her masters and doctorate in nursing from MUSC with a family nurse practitioner emphasis. She practices under the senior supervision of Dr. Lori Carnsew. A Nurse Practitioner must complete a master's or doctoral degree program and have advanced clinical training beyond their initial professional registered nurse preparation. Didactic and clinical courses prepare nurses with specialized knowledge and clinical competency to practice in primary care, acute care and long-term health care settings. Rivera’s emphasis is on the health and well-being of the whole person. She works with patients on health promotion and disease prevention through education and counselling. She is married with one child and enjoys family and Clemson sports.

Athletics

The SWU Men’s Soccer Team will host an open devotional each Friday from 3:45 – 4:30 p.m. at Freedom’s Hill Church. Faculty, staff, alumni and others are invited to join in for a brief time of worship and a different speaker each week to provide a word of challenge and encouragement. Learn to Scuba Dive


Have you ever thought about learning how to SCUBA dive? Upstate SCUBA has a special deal for employees of SWU. We are opening up the class here at SWU to faculty, staff and their immediate families (non-credit). This course will last one night a week for five weeks for the pool and classroom portion and then a few hours each day on one weekend for the open water dives. The cost will be $250, which includes the course fees, use of equipment, boat fees, etc. You will have to provide your own personal equipment (mask, fins, snorkel, boots, dive log, and mouth pieces) which is available for purchase at the dive shop. Other equipment discounts are also available to participants of this class. Actual class dates and times will be determined by all the students sometime this week. Of course, there are no guarantees every story will be accepted but we’re always looking out for engaging, newsworthy content.
