Letter from the Directors
Dear Everest Family,

There’s no weekend like the weekend after the Everest Camping Trip. The pleasures of a soft bed and a hot shower are amplified by the warm memories made and that special sense of being part of a strong community. This is the number one reason we embark on such an adventure every year - to form the relationships and bonds, especially among mentor groups, that constitute the nurturing community that will sustain rigorous learning for the rest of the academic year.

I asked our Snow Leopards when we first arrived to spend the two days paying extra attention to showing a spirit of “TIOS” - This Is Our School.

I reminded them that when Everest first opened in 2009, there were forces that did not want our school to exist. They kept us out of our building, using an obscure regulation claiming that it was slightly too close to the nearest airport, to discourage us from opening. However, the community’s resolve was not to be broken and we opened on time, putting 100 students on the Caltrain every day and walking a mile from the Palo Alto stop to hold five weeks of class on the campus of Stanford University. This spirit of TIOS was necessary if we wanted our school to exist, and the Snow Leopards (who hadn’t actually chosen their mascot yet) were up to the challenge.

A spirit of TIOS was especially necessary on the Camping Trip this year, because our collective behavior last year did not leave an excellent impression with our camp neighbors, who complained about our noisiness overnight. This year, our Snow Leopards more than lived up to that challenge. As a collective community, they:
  • Showed CURIOSITY as they tried out new activities with new friends during breakout sessions on Thursday afternoon.
  • Showed COMPASSION as they included new people into their social groups and cheered on their peers during the talent show.
  • Showed COURAGE as a few brave souls stepped up Thursday night to share their talents with the entire school and as every single mentor group performed their unique spirited chant on Friday morning.
  • Showed INTEGRITY when competing in the Mentor Olympics on Friday morning.
  • Showed RESPONSIBILITY as they took care of their own “village,” the area where one mentor group from each grade set up camp for the night.
  • Showed RESPECT as they thanked parents for their volunteering, picked up after themselves, and - most importantly after last year - honored the 10pm quiet time by reducing the noise level in their tents after dark.
Of course, none of this experience would be possible without the incredible generosity of time, energy, and resources of our parents. SO many of you participated, by:
  • Completing the permission slip and making sure your student turned it in on time.
  • Donating a small sum of money to help cover the costs of the trip.
  • Driving on Thursday morning or Friday afternoon, offering your vehicle, gas, and navigational skills to transport every single one of our Snow Leopards. I’m happy to report that we had 100% of seat belts covered on both legs of the trip thanks to your volunteerism! Special shout out goes to the driver leads who helped with the tireless work of collecting, verifying, and documenting all forms: Mimi Tudor, Mimi Ezray, Stacey Signorello, and Jay Patel.
  • Cooking, serving, and cleaning up three delicious meals for about 450 people and doing it all with a smile. Our parents rocked the kitchen duty, and everyone benefitted from those warm meals! Special thanks to the coordinator of food for the trip who not only planned the meals and arranged the order but also personally drove it up that windy road in his truck: 10th grader parent Dave Signorello!
  • Helping coordinate Mentor Olympics, documenting the goings-on with great photography, sharing Everest tips and tricks with new families, and generally being present and helping out in any way possible is the definition of the TIOS spirit. Special shout out to 12th grader parent Chris Kelly who joined us on his EIGHTH Everest camping trip and has been a consistent and positive figure in our community since we started.
  • Donating some sound equipment in a pinch. When Everest’s sound system malfunctioned before the trip, we were in a real bind… until 11th grader parent Mika Bayless stepped up to offer her family’s sound set up and saved the day for the talent show. Thank you!
  • Coordinating all of these efforts requires a lion’s heart, and we had that in 11th grader parent Jay Patel whose persistence, verve, foresight, and organization has been instrumental in putting on this trip since last September when he started thinking about it. Thank you, Jay, for the time and commitment you have so generously contributed.

Please join us in giving a thunderous appreciation to everyone whose generosity made this amazing trip possible!

Sincerely,
Chris Lewine & Drew Moriates

Fundraising Has Begun!
We have started our Everest fundraising campaign. New this year - you will receive an Everest magnet for your car when you make a donation! Be a proud supporter of the Everest community.

We want to make fundraising simple at Everest...no auctions, no parties, we are just asking for a simple donation. What would you money go toward? Here is a short list:

- Camping Trip
- Study Trip

- AP/College Testing FeesAthletics
- Scholarships to cover fees for students who can't afford to pay for these activities
- Everest General Fund

What won't your money be used for? We won't use it to cover teacher's salaries, facilities, anything that would be considered a core function of running the school. Our goal is to truly do MORE with LESS. Any money that we raise will go toward the extra programs that make our school really special. Come to Back to School Night Part 2 to hear more about our fundraising philosophy.

How much should you donate? That is a completely personal decision. Last year we received donations ranging from $25 to $5000. Any amount helps!

In the near future, we will be talking more about how Everest gets our funding (short answer: the state of California, we don't receive any funding from Summit Public Schools).

To make a donation, you have four options:

  1. Make a donation through http://myschoolbucks.com
  2. Make a donation online via http://summitps.org/donate (be sure to specify Everest)
  3. Make a donation with a check using these forms: English or Spanish
  4. The paper donation forms can also be picked up at the front desk

Questions about fundraising? Please contact Chris Lewine or Linda Burt.

First Fridays Parent Coffee

Parents, please join us for our First Friday Parent Coffee event!  This is informal, no host, monthly gathering.  Come join us and meet other parents, chat, and enjoy your favorite hot or cold beverage.  The First Friday Parent Coffee will be held this Friday, September 2nd, at 8:15 - 9:45 am at Main & Elm, a coffeehouse at 150 Elm Street in Redwood City.  Hope to see you there!

Graphic Designer & Website Designer Needed
Are you a graphic designer or website designer? We are in need of your services. We would like a graphic designer to help us design some fundraising banners...should be a simple few hour job at the most. We would also love a website designer to help us make our website more user friendly. If you have some ideas and a few hours to help us, we would love to hear from you.

Please contact Linda Burt if you could help us in either of these two areas.

New Family FAQs Corner

What if my student is sick or cannot come to school?

Attendance is important.  However we understand that illness and other life events do happen.  Everest parents should call the Attendance line (650) 366-1050 by 8:15 am to report any student absence.

As a parent, how can I feel part of this community more quickly?

Everest is a small school where ‘everyone knows everyone’.  So it’s very easy.  Sign up for communications (yahoo group, newsletter, etc.).  Get involved and meet other parents.  If you see a need or something that could be improved, talk to the appropriate persons (mentor, director, EPO, etc.) and volunteer to help make a positive difference.  Volunteering will bring enrichment to our students but also help you become part of the Everest community.  There are a variety of opportunities that may accommodate schedules and financial resources.  All parent volunteer opportunities are posted at http://everest.summitps.org/parents/volunteer.

For more FAQs, see http://everest.summitps.org/parents/new-family-welcome or access it directly here .
Join the Everest Parents' Yahoo Group

We’d like to invite you to join the Everest Parents Yahoo Group!  This is an informal group that is sponsored by the Everest EPO and moderated by a parent volunteer coordinator.  This is another communication channel where parents can share information about school or community events, request carpools or volunteers, and share information about academic, extracurricular and community opportunities.  The goal of this group is to foster communication among parents of students attending Everest Public School.    This is not an official communications channel. Please continue to contact teachers or administration directly.

If you’d like to join, you will need a yahoo ID or will need to create one.  You can then click on this link https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Everestparents/info and request membership approval.   If you have further questions or need assistance, please contact our parent volunteer coordinator, Stacey Signorello at Stacey@im-electric.com.
