Those of you familiar with us here at Applied Colour know that our company is built on the strength of our relationships. To that end, and given the new, social media / electronic era that we are immersed in, we wanted to continue developing relationships through a Quarterly Newsletter.  But this won’t be your typical corporate newsletter - it will, instead, offer a few peeks behind the curtain, so to speak - a couple of tidbits in every issue that show a different side of Applied Colour.  We hope you like it and share it with your friends and family and, as always, your feedback is greatly appreciated.
We're at it again.....
Applied Colour believes that work should be fun & Creative, in this particular case it was both!

Our friends at Habit approached us this summer looking to partner in providing a safe and well marked area for those who cycle to their client's building. The parkade itself was in decent shape paint wise yet the owner was still looking to add a bit of "Wow" to the area. We transformed the basic storage area into a bright and colourful bike storage facility, carrying the vibrant teal colour out into the parkade. We created a feature wall around the elevator lobbies and added black kickers around all the columns finishing it all off with a high gloss epoxy on the floor to give it some extra bling!  This project goes to show that even a brand new space can be taken to a whole new level of fabulous!

Watch for our new promotional on Epoxy floors coming your way soon!

It’s been a long, hot summer, but as the calendar gradually turns to October, fall is here and before you know it, the cold winter weather will be here, too.  As a building owner or Facilities Manager here are a few things you can do to ensure you and your buildings are ready for the change in seasons:

Perform Roof Inspections
Look for areas of loose shingles, especially around the building eaves where ice dams can form during winter, which allow moisture to enter under the shingles.  In addition, check flashings at vertical wall intersections, chimneys, and plumbing vent boots to confirm there are no holes or other damage that can allow water to enter the building during heavy rain or snow.  Adequate roof maintenance not only reduces leaks, but extends the life of your roofing systems.

Clean Gutters and Downspouts
Ensure all gutters and downspouts are clear from debris so that they adequately drain water away.  This continues to be important as the season progresses and leaves begin to fall.  Consider pruning overhanging trees at this time to keep the leaves and debris off the roof.  Clogged gutters can cause water to back up, which will damage the roof and the trim around the roof and soffits, as well as exterior siding or paint.

Inspect All Exterior Doors and Windows
Check to make sure that caulking is still flexible and is sealing any gaps between window/door frames and exterior walls.  This ensures the warm air stays inside the building during the winter and seals the exterior building envelope from water penetration and leaks.  For added energy savings, check the weather stripping at all exterior door frames to make sure it’s still in place and serving its intended purpose.

Check Exterior Faucets and Service Irrigation System
Install frost-proof exterior hose bib faucets or drain older non-frost-proof faucets to keep them from freezing and breaking during the winter.  This is also a good time to have the underground irrigation system serviced and prepared for winter by a qualified irrigation contractor.

Exterior Site Concrete  and Asphalt Pavement
Perform regular sealing of exterior cracks in sidewalks and paved areas during the fall.  Water that freezes inside these cracks can cause the concrete to spall and deteriorate, leading to more costly repairs later.

Tune Up Your Heating System
Inspect all the furnaces and heat pumps to ensure they are clean and operating properly with clean filters.  Clogged and dirty filters cause the heating system to waste energy while heating the building to your desired set point temperatures.  Check carbon monoxide and smoke detectors to make sure they are operational.   A qualified HVAC contractor will not only perform a visual inspection of your heating system, but will also remove covers and check filters, check blowers, ensure flues are clear and operating properly, and perform other safety checks that will assure a safe and warm environment for your tenants this winter.

Putting these items on your fall “To-Do List” over the next month or two will help ensure energy-efficient, dry, and comfortable buildings this winter.

Highlights From Applied Colour BC
Michael has been out on the Island since May and things for Applied Colour BC are clicking along beautifully! He has secured work with several new clients and is loving all the beautiful opportunities coming his way.  Michael and his family are settling in nicely and are enjoying the company of friends and family that have come out to visit this summer.  We know great things for Applied Colour BC and with Michael leading the way it's sure to be a huge success!
While the summer has definitely been busy, we still took the time to come together and have a little fun.  Our Applied Colour Staff & Family BBQ was a great time full of laughter, fun and good food. Daryn and Brad had an exciting game of life size Jenga - winner won control of the company! However, no one saw who won as we were all too busy getting a salsa dance lesson from Leo. A few of our staff members were not able to attend but we know they were there in spirit!
A huge thank you for all of our staff and their families, for everything that you bring to our company - we're all in this together!
What we're reading....
The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks

Most of us believe that we will finally feel satisfied and content with our lives when we get the good news we have been waiting for, find a healthy relationship, or achieve one of our personal goals.  However, this rarely happens.  Good fortune is often followed by negative emotions that overtake us and result in destructive behaviours.  "I don't deserve this", "this is too good to be true", or any number of harmful thought patterns prevent us from experiencing the joy and satisfaction we have earned.  Sound familiar? This is what New York Times bestselling author Gay Hendricks calls the Upper Limit Problem, a negative emotional reaction that occurs when anything positive enters our lives.  The Upper Limit Problem not only prevents happiness, but it actually stops us from achieving our goals.  It is the ultimate road block.

In the Big Leap, Dr. Hendricks reveals a simple yet comprehensive program for overcoming this barrier to happiness and fulfillment, presented in a way that engages both the mind and the heart.  He was worked closely with more than one thousand extraordinary achievers in the business and the arts, from rock stars to Fortune 500 executives whose stories are featured in these pages.  Hendricks describes the four hidden fears that are at the root of the Upper Limit Problem and The Big Leap delivers a proven method for identifying which of these four fears prevents us from reaching our personal upper limit and then breaking through that limitation to achievement!

The Big Leap provides a clear path for achieving our true potential and attaining not only financial success but also success in love and life.

You can see Dr.Hendricks speak about this book and hear more about the Upper Limit Problem in this You Tube interview.

Summer Fun!
Applied Colour believes in building relationships, and once again this summer we did just that when we met Russ and Pat. A husband and wife duo working with Melcor for more than 25 years.

Russ and Pat are the
maintenance managers at Leduc Common shopping centre and our crew had a blast getting to know them while we repainted the exterior walls of the complex.

They purchased the "Russtang" last summer and have been very excited to head out on the road to various car shows and parades around our Province this year. It's always a win win for us when we can help maintain a building's longevity and build relationships with others in our community!
