What Lahore's Orange Line says about the politics of the poor
The Lahore High Court recently ordered further construction of the city's first railway-based transit, the Orange Line, to be halted until an alternative route that does not encroach on historic monuments is agreed upon. However, this decision can still be overturned by the Supreme Court. Writing for Dawn, CDPR Affiliate Umair Javed argues that elite advocates of environmental justice and cultural preservation need to build coalitions with the poor - who stand to benefit greatly from better public transport - in order for these issues to be addressed simultanesouly with urban development.
