Hot dog cart creates jobs
for youth aging out of care
It’s mid-day and the sun beats down on Portage Avenue. Heat bounces off the sidewalks, the buildings, and a shiny new hot dog cart. The cart, “Grillin’ 4 Good”, is part of Marymound’s Student Work Experience Education Program (SWEEP). They’re in their second week of operation thanks to donors like you.

Lunch hour is just about to get underway. Travis Liewicki, SWEEP’s Program Leader, is helping two youth set up the cart.

Robert is one of the youth behind the cart. He’s a tall, young man with a cautious smile. He tells us that Grillin’ 4 Good isn’t his first job. “Before I was in the grocery store—” he pauses, searching for a way to explain, “but that was a long time ago. This was before I was in CFS.”

Travis explains. It’s overwhelming for kids to deal with the situation that led them to entering CFS. For older youth, like Robert, they also have to deal with the need to start earning money like an adult.

Many, like Robert, already live on their own.

Thanks to you, LITE provided $1,500 for Grillin’ 4 Good’s wages. (You hired Robert!) He’s learning customer service skills while being supported, as he must quickly become an adult. According to Robert, this job is going to let him take “the next step forward.” It’s also the job he needs now – and you made it happen!

Grillin’ 4 Good’s first customer arrives – she’s one of the workers from the Child and Family Services agencies along this sunny strip of Portage Avenue. She seems “in the know” about who’s behind the counter as she smiles and wishes Robert best of luck.

Robert nods a shy smile back, and steps up under the umbrella. Tongs in hand. Because of you, Robert is ready for the next customer.
