 Dear Alumni, Students, and Friends,
School is back in session! Campus is buzzing with new and returning students as another academic year begins. We're excited to continue to build on the success of the previous year and boost our program's profile on campus and beyond.
Professor Greg Nemet is back to chair EAP after returning from his sabbatical in Berlin Germany where he worked at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) and the Mercator Research Institute for Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC).
This semester, we are launching a new weekly seminar titled "Modeling for Energy and Policy." I am leading the seminar, along with Professor Paul Wilson, and it has grown into shared endeavor with many EAP faculty across campus The course was inspired by retired EAP Professor Wes Foell, who volunteered to be our first speaker. This course will expose EAP students to various modeling applications and communities. We meet weekly on Thursdays from 12 - 1 pm in room 1115 of the Wisconsin Energy Institute. We encourage alumni, students, and faculty alike to join us for presentations and engaging discussion around models.

SCB Group Sponsors Paper Competition
We are so excited to announce an amazing new program linking EAP with a leading energy investment group! Over the summer, EAP was approached by SCB Group, an international investing organization with a specialization in energy. SCB will award cash prizes to top papers in Dr. Richard Shaten’s new EAP class, Energy Markets. This amazing opportunity for our students builds on a program launched by SCB at University College, Dublin in 2012 - good luck to the Energy Market students this year! Additionally, EAP students in their final year of the program are encouraged to apply for paid internships listed on SCB's website.

posts for The EAP Blog!
GEAPs invites students, alumni, faculty, and friends of the EAP program to submit posts to The EAP Blog. GEAPS will accept submissions in any form, from a well-developed research abstract to a back-of-the-envelope calculation on an interesting energy problem. The group just asks that submissions provide meaningful insights into the broader discussion of modern energy issues. Posts can be submitted by emailing GEAPS.

Ana Dyreson
Ana Dyreson (PhD. Mechnical Engineering) is interested in cooling applications related to large scale concentrated solar power plants.
Growing up in central Wisconsin, Ana couldn't help but develop an awareness of her energy consumption. She recalls "doing small things to conserve energy, like walking to school." In college, renewable and sustainable energy remained at the core of her interests though at the time it was unclear how to fit those interests into a degree program. At UW-Madison she completed an Engineering Mechanics degree while selecting elective courses and extracurricular activities that would provide the broader background in energy issues.
Upon graduation in 2007, she stayed in the Madison area and worked on improving energy efficiency. After five years in the working world, Ana decided to return to school. Wanting a change of scenery, she enrolled in Northern Arizona University in a Mechanical Engineering Masters program. In the desert southwest, she began to learn solar energy systems in greater detail, building the knowledge base that would further her studies.
Ana didn't expect to come back to Madison. However, when investigating energy related graduate programs, she realized that UW Madison would be the best fit for her pursuit of a Mechanical Engineering PhD with an emphasis on energy through the EAP program. The certificate provided the course structure she sought to further her energy knowledge beyond her engineering courses, adding economics and policy. As Ana began attending EAP sponsored events, she became aware of the community fostered through the certificate and appreciates how the EAP network exposed her to industry and energy professionals.
Her research in the UW Solar Lab focuses on improving cooling technologies for large scale solar thermal collectors.She's particularly focused on a new type of cooling to improve the overall efficiency of solar plants while avoiding use of water for cooling in the desert environments where the plants are located. Always on the move, Ana has spent the last two summers away - at an internship at NREL in Colorado and teaching an engineering course in Hangzhou, China. Upon graduation, Ana wishes to be in a teaching-focused faculty position, educating the next generation of engineers to address global energy problems.
Additionally, Ana submitted a post for the EAP Blog on the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris (COP 21) and the Clean Power Plan (CPP). Her post seeks to provide an educational overview of COP21 and CPP as well as the necessary actions needed to address greenhouse gas emissions.
