What Does Recovery
Mean to You?

September is National Recovery Month 2016!

This month, in honor of all types of recovery, we want to know what recovery means to YOU. Go to our Facebook page, leave your comment, and be automatically entered to win a $50.00 gift certificate to a local restaurant! Whether you consider yourself to be a person in recovery or a recovery ally, everyone is welcome to share their thoughts. The winner will be randomly selected and contacted on Monday, October 3rd.

Caregivers Raising Children Impacted by Substance Use

The Commission on the Status of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren and members from Attorney General Healey’s Office are hosting a series of forums to exchange information, learn and listen to families and caregivers in Massachusetts who have been impacted by the opioid epidemic.

New Space for the RLC

The Western Massachusetts Recovery Learning Community (RLC) is looking for a new space in Greenfield! Ideally, their new space will include: 
  • At least one separate room
  • A kitchenette
  • A fully accessible entrance and bathroom 

This space could be a storefront, house or upstairs suite. If you have any suggestions or know of potential prospects, please contact Natan Cohen at Natan@westernmassrlc.org.

Athletes and Opioids

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH), Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) and Massachusetts Technical Assistance Partnership for Prevention (MassTAPP) have put together a resource packet for student athletes about opioid misuse prevention. The packet offers information for athletes, coaches, athletic directors, trainers and school nurses. Specific components include: 
  • Preventing Prescription Opioid Misuse Among Student Athletes
  • What to Know About Prescription Opioids
  • Injury Management: A Key Component of Prescription Opioid Misuse Prevention
  • Guidance on Communications After a Non-Concussion Sports Injury

Shelburne Falls Overdose Prevention Training

The Task Force is working with Tapestry Health and the North Quabbin Community Coalition to host a series of opioid overdose prevention and nasal Narcan trainings. These trainings are free and open to all interested community members. Registration is not required. 

Our last training of this series will take place on:
  • Wednesday, September 28th, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm in Shelburne Falls at the Shelburne-Buckland Community Center
All participants will be given a free Narcan Kit!

Event Recap: Opioid Epidemic Hack-a-thon

Last weekend, members of the Opioid Task Force joined innovators from all over the world for the Massachusetts General Hospital Opioid Epidemic Challenge & Summit Hack-a-thon in Boston. Nineteen teams pitched their solutions to solving the opioid epidemic, with ideas ranging from creating a text-message search engine to help active users locate information about needle exchanges and safe injection sites, to developing mobile treatment vans called 'MATMobiles' and using horses for equine therapy.

The guide includes information about:
