Dear Parents, Guardians, Alumni, Parishioners, and Friends of Assumption-St. Bridget School,

We are in the groove this week as students, teachers and families settle in to the new school year.  We look forward to seeing all PreK-5 parents this evening at 7:00 p.m. for Curriculum Night, beginning in Fellowship Hall in Assumption Parish.  This general session will have some new information about this year’s School Improvement Goals and new assessment tool, MAP.  Everyone will then have the opportunity to visit their child(ren)’s classroom, meet the teacher(s), meet all specialty teachers, and get familiar with yearly expectations.  Please plan on attending this informative evening.

In regards to our new assessment tool (MAP)that the Office of Catholic Schools has adopted, please click here for helpful parent information on the assessment.  As teachers, we look forward to instant results and data that tell us each student’s individual instructional level and help us to better adjust instruction to student’s readiness level and unique needs.  The assessment is given three times a year and focuses on student growth.  It is nationally normed with students of same age and grade level.  What is very unique and new to students is that the assessment is adaptive.  This means that each question is generated depending upon how the student answered the prior question.  The test takes the student to the “frustration level” (50% right/50% wrong) and this results in the “instructional level” for the student- very valuable information for the teacher.  The MAP test is also computer-based and all students will be using a device or laptop to take the test.

While you all were away this summer, progress continued with our Master Plan and Capital Campaign.  ASB Capital Campaign Cabinet meets regularly with our fundraising consultants from Optimus, to move the campaign ahead.  ASB is in initial stages of sharing our future growth and plans with the City of Seattle.  We also are working closely with Archdiocese of Seattle throughout this process.  So you may not “see” progress, please know there is a lot happening to make the future of ASB facilities a reality for all of us!

Due to moving classrooms, fruition of our Master Plan, and outgrowing our current space, many of you know that the location and feel of our library has changed.  However, we still have Library time!  Books have been temporarily relocated to classrooms, storage and hallway bookshelves.  Ms. Prewitt is teaching all of our students how to access books via our online checkout system, Destiny.  So although not ideal, this solution will work as we work towards our new library and innovation lab in our future.

This weekend at both parishes, our eighth graders will be assisting at Sunday Mass:  Assumption Parish at 10:30 and St. Bridget Parish at 9:30. ALL students and families are welcome and highly encouraged to attend one of these Masses.   Also, our pastors would love to see ALL students who attend proudly wear their school uniforms to make a presence in the church.  Thank you to our eighth grade students, Mrs. Hendricks, Mrs. Kane, and our parent volunteers who make this possible!

Last week, each family received two paper surveys dealing with income level and language spoken in the home.  Currently, we have 41% and 53% of those two surveys back.  We NEED to have at least 80 % returned.  This return rate alone could allow ASB to access more federal money than we currently do, which would then support resources for our students.  PLEASE return the surveys ASAP to the main office.  Thank you to those families who have already returned them.

Our awesome faculty and staff continue to seek out and share wonderful stories, research and resources supporting building of a growth mindset and grit- two focal points of our ASB culture beginning this year.  Click here to view a moving short story exemplifying getting out of our comfort zone so that we can continue to grow and improve ourselves.  I encourage you to view it with your children too!

In Christ’s peace,
Christina Vierra McGill

LOST AND FOUND:
Happy September! This time of year lots of jackets, sweatshirts and sweaters are coming on and off as temperatures and activities change.
Please make sure your child’s belongings are labeled. This includes sweaters, sweatshirts, jackets, shoes for the gym floor, lunchboxes, water bottles…
If your child loses an item and it is labeled it is really easy to get back to you!
Several online companies like Mabels Labels and Label Daddy sell custom labels that don’t come off in the wash or the dishwasher!
Lost items end up in the Lost and Found bin located in the main building by the girls bathroom.
Unlabeled items in the Lost and Found bin unclaimed for a week plus are donated to St. Vincent de Paul Society.
If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask me - Debbie Dreis  or 206 331-0268
Thanks and happy labeling, if you haven’t already!

Scriptember!

SCRIPTEMBER starts next week! Scriptember will run from Monday, September 19 – Thursday, October 6. Our goal is to bring awareness to the ASB scrip program and to encourage all families to purchase weekly scrip, or better yet, sign up for a monthly scrip standing order.

Scrip is an excellent way to raise money for ASB without any added cost to you!  Our gift cards are purchased by ASB at a discount and then sold to you at face value. The school receives 2%-20% on each gift card. We have MANY gift cards available, for example: QFC, Met Market, Safeway, Amazon, Starbucks, Red Robin, Gap, Nordstrom, Chevron, Dennis Uniform, to name just a few. If you make a weekly trip to the grocery store, stop at Starbucks now and then, and/or take your family out to eat on occasion, please consider purchasing scrip for your visit so you can benefit ASB while you shop!

During Scriptember, there are many exciting ways to win fantastic prizes for your students:

(1) Class with the highest total scrip sales over $1,500 during Scriptember will win a class Top Pot Doughnut party!
(2) All families that sign up for a new minimum monthly standing order of $250 during Scriptember will get a FREE DRESS COUPON for each child in their family! (Families with existing standing order of $500+ will also receive coupons.)
(3) Class with the greatest % of families participating in scrip standing orders during Scriptember will win a class PIZZA party!

A huge THANK YOU to all of our scrip supporters!

We’d also like to say a special thank you to our ASB PCC shoppers! With your rechargeable ASB PCC card, you continue to earn 5% of your purchases for ASB. Our last check from PCC was just over $1,700 (Nov.-May). Thank you for continuing to support ASB with PCC!

ASB's 2016 Auction - O Starry Night

We know December still feels so far away, but the auction team is already procuring and planning. Our team still needs help in several key areas - display/set up team and decorations are two areas where we need a lead! We have other positions and volunteer opportunities as well, so If you're interested in any area, or want to find out more about how you can contribute to the auction effort, please email auction@asbschool.org.

Calling all PreK-7 ASB parents:                                                             We need YOU!

We are looking for new Parent Ambassadors!  It's easy, fun and a great way to fulfill service hours in a meaningful and impactful way. Our PA Board is in its second year at ASB, and has proven to be a highly effective recruitment tool! Currently, we have a lot of 8th grade parents serving as PAs - we strive for a balanced representation of grades -  so we need new parents, especially in the younger grades!  Parent Ambassadors:
  • Help staff Open House Events (dates below) and help publicize the events
  • Spread the word about ASB among friends, neighbors & co-workers!
Both moms and dads are welcome - we'll give you all the info and tools you need!  Please contact Kelley Martin or Kelley Kane for more information.

Easy Fundraising Opportunities
Did you know there are several easy ways to make money for ASB without even barely trying?  Please take a moment to look at the links below and educate yourself.   And YES, our school still participates in Box Tops - it IS still a thing!

Amazon Smile
Are you already shopping on Amazon?  In one simple step, you can start donating .5% of every purchase you make on Amazon to ASB.  The items are the same, the prices are the same and there is no cost to you. There is no reason NOT to make the switch!  If your family owns their own business please pass along this information to the supply purchasers there as well.  You can ask grandparents, family and friends to support ASB through Amazon Smile by sharing this link  If you have any questions on the Amazon Smile program, please direct them to Tiffany Johnson .

Box Tops for Education
Collect Box Tops for your school on all participating items that you buy.  You can make this a fun project for your child at home. Look HERE  for the official collection sheets you can use.  If you don’t have time to do the cutting and attaching at home on your own, don’t worry!  We have volunteers available to do that for you so please still send them in.
If you have any questions on the Box Tops program, please direct them to Tiffany Johnson .

Technology Recycling
Recycle your cell phones, toners, and ink cartridges and make cash for ASB.  We collect camera cell phones, both used and new OEM ink and toner cartridges. If you have any questions regarding the technology recycling program, please direct them to Felicia Watson .
We are through the first week of school and Extended Care is off to a tremendous start.  If you have not yet registered your child(ren) for Extended Care, it is never too late.  We will be accepting registration forms throughout the school year, so families that are still trying to figure out their childcare needs have all the time that they need to get things situated.  Please do not hesitate to contact Dylan Pouley if you have any questions or need to make inquiries about our program.

As many of you are aware the Assumption Parish Gym has a new hardwood floor; thank you to all the families that contributed to this project.  The new floor is beautiful and a great deal of work has gone into the precision and excellence that is required to create this new addition to ASB School.  As such, we are doing our very best as a community to protect our new floor and keep it in the best condition possible.  Extended Care uses this facility on a daily basis in both the mornings and afternoons and our plan to protect the floor asks that our students refrain from wearing their street shoes in the gym.  Similar to PE class at ASB, we are going to ask that students at Extended Care either change into their PE shoes before using the gym, or remove their street shoes and wear their socks before entering the gym.  If a student does not have their PE shoes with them on a day that they are attending Extended Care, they will remove their shoes and wear their socks while they are in the gym.  We will not prevent any students from using the gym, but we will ask that they do not wear street shoes into the gym.

**Update on Gym Shoes** If families that use Extended Care regularly would like to keep an extra pair of gym shoes at Extended Care, we are more than happy to keep the shoes with us at Extended Care for the children to use.  We are not asking families to get another, third pair of school shoes for Extended Care use, but if families would like to do this, we are happy to store them at Extended Care for the students to use.

If you have any questions about Extended Care, do not hesitate to contact me, I am happy to assist in whatever way that I can.

Thank you,
Dylan Pouley

  • Extended Care closes at 5:45 p.m. each afternoon.
