September 2016 Edition

Welcome back to school!

2015-16 was an EPIC record breaking year for Michigan DECA; we were able to provide services to more students than ever!  Our membership totaled 8,505 and we had record participation at our State and International Career Development Conferences.  This year looks to be as rewarding as we challenge our members to OWN YOUR FUTURE at conferences in Detroit, Indianapolis, and Anaheim.

Membership

The 2016-2017 Michigan DECA Guide was dropped off at the university mail room on Friday, September 2, 2106, so you should be receiving it any day.  It has also been posted to our website at http://mideca.org/teachers/docs.  Please contact me (dwait@emich.edu) if you do not receive yours by September 12th.

The National DECA Guide was mailed to all chapters over the summer. Please contact me (dwait@emich.edu) if you do not receive yours.

Membership Kit – DECA is not sending a membership kit this year.  In its place they have posted the membership video on their website, and they will mail the other materials with their monthly chapter packets.  They will also send weekly updates each Tuesday via DECA Direct Online.

Membership rosters and payments are due October 31. – The state and national fees are $17.00 per person and your payment is to be sent directly to National DECA.

Gimmie 5! – Michigan DECA is challenging each chapter to recruit just 5 more members than they had last year.  Each chapter that accomplishes this challenge will receive a recognition plaque at the State Conference.   We are also encouraging chapters to participate in National DECA’s membership campaign to double their recognition.

Added Incentive for the Gimmie 5! Award Recipients
To chapters that increase both their membership AND district conference participation by FIVE members, Michigan DECA will provide a $250 credit off from the District Conference Registration fees.  The process to receive this credit is simple.  All a chapter needs to do is to achieve the steps below:
The numbers needed for each chapter to qualify for this incentive credit have been posted to: http://mideca.org/teachers/incentivefordistrictregistrationcredit/

Other Updates

State Officer Request - In a day or so, you will receive an email from the State Officers.  We would appreciate it if you would forward it to two of your members or chapter officers that you feel would be good to serve on Michigan DECA’s District Council.  Thank you in advance for your assistance.

MIDECA.org – has been redesigned to be more student focused.  We hope you like the new look and that your students find it to be a great resource for their participation in DECA.

DECA Advisor Information Form – This important form was mailed separately from the Michigan DECA Guide this year so it would not be lost with the other items in the back to school mailing.  Please take a minute to review, update and return it when it is received so we can make sure that you receive every mailing and update through the entire year.

Facebook - Invite your members to like Michigan DECA on Facebook.  It has been designed to help your members build a stronger connection with the organization.  The page content is being supplied by the State Officers and monitored by several staff members.

Michigan DECA Guide Updates

Please note that the items listed here are a summary of the major changes to this year’s Michigan DECA Guide.  Several other areas that are not listed here have been updated and clarified.  Please read the entire Guide for complete information.
  1. The Advisors’ Council has revised the minimum number of chaperones that are required for the District Conference.  More information is listed on page 33-34.  The Advisor Code of Ethics has also been updated to reflect this change, which is posted online on our Forms page.
  2. Remember that the hotel registration for the State Conference are to be turned in to Michigan DECA, not the hotel between February 1-9, 2017.  Please see pages 40-41 for more information.
  3. All written events (except the Chapter Awards Program) will need to be uploaded to TurnItIn by the chapter advisor between February 6-17, 2017 so that it can be reviewed for plagiarism.  All written events that have not been submitted to TurnItIn by the deadline will be penalized 10 points, and given 3 days to be submitted.  If not submitted within the 3 day extension window, the entry will be disqualified.  Complete details on the process will be sent to you in January.
2016-2017 Competitive Event Changes:
  1. The Principles of Business Administration Events performance element will move from a content interview format to a business role-play situation.
  2. The evaluation forms for Principles of Business Administration Events, and Individual Series Events will include both the performance indicators and the evaluation of 21st Century Skills, similar to the Team Decision Making Events. Refer to the event guidelines for more information on www.deca.org /high-school-programs/high-school-competitive-events/
  3. The Marketing Communications Team Decision Making event will become Marketing Management Team Decision Making (MTDM) and the Marketing Management Individual Series event will become Marketing Communications Individual Series (MCS). This allows for more marketing communications pathways performance indicators to be used in Marketing Communications role-plays.
  4. The Franchise Business Plan can now be comprised of 1-3 members of the DECA chapter.
  5. The Business Growth Plan now requires that all of the 1-3 members be owners listed on the official documentation of ownership.  This documentation must be included when the event is submitted for competition.
  6. The format guidelines and evaluation forms of the Entrepreneurship Events were modified based on feedback after the first year of implementation.
  7. DECA has notified us of a slight error in the numbering of the sections, DECA has posted updated event guidelines on their website.  In most cases, the final Roman numeral for the optional appendix was mislabeled. For the Learn and Earn Project and Independent Business Plan, the last two roman numerals were mislabeled.  Please make sure your members download the new guidelines and assign the numbering of the sections accordingly.

-Have a Great Year!
