Useful Resources
Turn2us is a national charity that helps people in financial hardship gain access to welfare benefits, charitable grants and support services.

Crowdfunding is a way to raise money, awareness and support for a project, from the people around you. It's a means of funding that allows individuals to make their ideas a reality with the power of the crowd.

Local giving helps local charities and community groups to connect with people, fundraise online and take control of their future.

Developing and hosting charities websites

The City of Bath College Bath College are offering to plan, build and host websites for registered charities in B&NES.  This is part of a student enterprise where the learners’ projects are used to assess their course criteria.  To cover there will be a charge of £60 only for the first year (including hosting), and £20 a year for the on-going hosting thereafter.  If you are interested visit their website or contact: Steve Harries, Course Leader & Personal Tutor Level 3 BTEC, email: steven.harries@bathcollege.ac.uk.

Bath.interests.me is a new community website launching in Bath and North East Somerset, which you are warmly invited to take advantage of, completely for free, to publicise your organisation and its activities.  For more information email: helen@interests.me.

Can you help by giving some unwanted items a new home?

Do you need kitchenware items to support your group's activities?
Do you have a creative arts project that could give a new life to these items?

The Council has been working with the University of  Bath to redistribute kitchenware donated by last year’s students to local organisations.  These items include: plates; bowls; mugs; cutlery; saucepans; sieves; graters; baking trays and other miscellaneous bits and bobs.

If you are interested please get in touch with Sara Dixon email: sara_dixon@bathnes.gov.uk.  Items will be donated for free to local community groups and charities.

Some of the items will also be on sale to members of the public at the Council’s second-hand furniture sale on the 5th November.   Any monies raised will be donated to charity chosen by the University of Bath.

You don’t have to face cancer alone
Your local service

Cancer is the toughest fight most of us will ever face. We know how hard it is to cope with the physical, practical and emotional effects of cancer. It can leave you feeling isolated and sometimes unable to perform essential tasks. Coping can be especially difficult if you don’t have family or friends close by or if you worry that you are asking for too much support from the same people over and over again. The Macmillan team is here to help. We offer local services delivered by our trained volunteers that can give you a helping hand.

Macmillan Buddies Service

Macmillan Buddies is a volunteer-led service providing practical and emotional support across Bath, North East Somerset and West Wiltshire for anyone who is affected by cancer, including carers and family members. Volunteers can make a huge difference by providing help tailored to individual needs for up to 12 weeks.

Support could include:
  • light gardening or housework
  • shopping
  • lifts to one-off appointments in the community
  • preparing a light meal
  • having a chat and a cup of tea
  • support over the phone
  • signposting to other relevant support services
The service can be accessed Monday to Friday, 9am – 8pm. For further information about how Macmillan Buddies can help you, call 07543 248714 or email bathbuddies@macmillan.org.uk If you would prefer, you can ask your cancer nurse specialist or health professional to contact us on your behalf.
NALC announces Star Council longlist

The Chew Valley Neighbourhood plan group has been included in the longlist of Local Councils nominated under the category 'Local Council Outstanding Project of the Year'.  The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) has announced the longlist for its Star Councils 2016 Awards.  NALC Star Councils 2016 Awards is an all important recognition of all the amazingly effective hard work this being undertaken by local parish and town councils, local councillors, local council officers and as well as by county associations.

NALC was inundated with hundreds of nominations, which shows and highlights the localist powerhouse work undertaken at the neighbourhood and community level. This all comes within the background of opportunities available through devolution and localism; and the challenges of the difficult financial climate many local areas face at the moment.

Pressure Ulcers Prevention Project

Pressure ulcers are a significant risk to people with restricted mobility, are the source of considerable pain to already poorly people and can lead to death. Worse still, they are preventable!  The Project has produced a variety of innovative resources to support both carers and patients/service users in preventing pressure ulcers, including a DVD, information books, door hangers and a patient passport. Training for carers can be made available.  BaNES NHS CCG and Sirona care and health are currently exploring how to roll out this important initiative more widely in collaboration with other agencies.  For further information please contact Jodie.Davies@Sirona-cic.org.uk

Welfare Reform

The Government's pilot to introduce significant changes to welfare payments includes the amounts payable, how they are paid and their timing. Most will be payable monthly in future and only to nominated bank accounts. It was recognised that these reforms will bring further hardship to people as well as recently released prisoners. Currently the Government is being lobbied to ameliorate some of these reforms but in the meantime, professionals are advised to read the briefing on the LSCB and LSAB websites.

Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH)

The Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) will go live on Monday 26th September and will be based at Keynsham Police Station. This is an important new resource that will make notifications of concerns and referrals much more effective. It is important to note that the MASH is not a substitute for existing arrangements for making referrals. It is a tool that will be used when such referrals are thought to require further clarification to assist an informed decision.

What's On
First Bath Soup Project

Congratulations to the lucky FIVE 'pitchers' whose ideas have been selected from a high level and calibre of applications received for the first ever Bath Soup Project event on the 3rd of November 2016.

They are....... drum roll................. Projects which support various and exciting things people are trying to achieve to help, enhance the lives of people in our community, and make a difference, who will take the money? to find out you need to be there.
  • B&NES Dementia Action Alliance
  • Bath Stroke Support Group
  • The Young Advocates
  • Three Ways School Enterprise
  • Vegmead
Have you reserved your place?  Book your place now.

Everyone in attendance pays a minimum of £5 and the purpose of the evening is to watch five people pitch an idea to improve their local community.

Once the ideas have been pitched, everyone gets a bowl of soup courtesy of Bath College, plus a chance to chat and mull over the pitch they want to vote for. When the votes have been counted, the project with the most votes receives all the cash raised on the night to start their project.

The event aims to bring together people who share a desire for a better community. The added advantage is they also get to meet people and share ideas and resources. New connections are made and it brings the community closer together.

Find out more by visiting the Volunteer Centre website

We aim to be a safe place where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together to share a common interest in improving their local community and bring people together who want to make a difference, engage others, have fun, be creative and make connections with their neighbours.

Get involved - Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a national youth charity that operates throughout the UK. Founded by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in 1956, DofE programmes are now delivered under licence by partners who offer it through DofE groups.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a voluntary, non-competitive programme of activities for anyone aged 14-25.  Doing their DofE gives young people the opportunity to experience new activities or develop existing skills. There are three progressive levels of programmes which when successfully completed lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Award. Young people create their own DofE programme by choosing a volunteering, physical and skills activity, going on an expedition and, for their Gold only, taking part in a residential activity.’

Bath & North East Somerset Council hold the DofE Licence enabling Volunteers to run Open Award Centres. There is currently one based in Bath City College and one based in Somerdale Pavilion, Keynsham. These are accessible to any young person who would like to undertake their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The Volunteers are recruited according to the Council’s safer recruitment policy and have relevant experience and/or qualifications according to their role.

Our Open Award Centres are looking for more participants to join them, young people can start their award from 14years old.  B&NES are looking at particularly working with young people who are not in education or may require more bespoke support to achieve their award.

Keynsham group meet in the Somerdale Pavilion, (Fry’s) on a Wednesday evening and are holding an Open Evening on Wednesday 2 November at 8pm.  Bath group meet in the Bath College, City Centre on a Thursday evening.
