Welcome to the ESSA e-Newsletter

As Colorado works on drafting the state's plan to implement the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), this periodic e-newsletter will provide updates on major developments, including information about the work of the hub and spoke committees, as well as important actions by the Colorado Department of Education, State Board of Education and U.S. Department of Education.

ESSA hub committee meetings to be streamed live

The central hub committee meetings will have a live audio feed that will be streamed on CDE's website. The next meeting is scheduled for noon Monday, Sept. 12, at the State Board of Education board room at 201 E. Colfax. Find the live stream here

Colorado's ESSA Listening Tour report to be released Sept. 16
A report distilling comments received during Colorado's extensive ESSA listening tour will be released on Friday, Sept. 16. The report can be found here.

ESSA spoke committees continue to meet
The seven ESSA spoke committees that will help develop and review sections of the state ESSA plan are continuing meeting and will begin presenting to the hub committee. The spoke committees are charged with working with constituency groups, incorporating feedback from listening tours and reviewing plans with the Hub Committee. (More) 

Notice of proposed rulemaking: ESSA Title I supplement not supplant
The United States Department of Education has proposed regulations on the Title I, supplement not supplant provision of ESSA.  The proposed regulations were published in the Federal Register on Tuesday, Sept. 6, and are available here. These proposed rules are subject to a 60-day public comment period, with comments due by Nov. 7. (More)

Critical review partnerships set up for plan development
CDE’s goal is to develop an ESSA plan that is understood and can be publicly supported by all. In addition to the organizations listed in the hub committee, plans will be reviewed as they are developed with a variety of groups that have a broad array of perspectives. Those interested in being added to CDE's list of critical review partners to provide feedback on state plan drafts and decision points may submit their contact information by following this link.

Proposed Changes to Reporting Requirements under ESSA from the U.S. Department of Education
The United States Department of Education has recently announced a public comment process on proposed, revised and continuing EDFacts Data Collection School Years 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2018-19. The proposed revisions were published in the Federal Register on Wednesday, Aug. 24, and are available here. These proposed revisions are subject to a 60-day public comment period, with comments due by Oct. 24.
