The ‘chair’.

Now common, up until the 16th century the chair was an article of state and dignity. For thousands of years chairs represented authority and power. For the populace, chests, benches and stools were utilized for seating. Chairs with intricate carving, paint or gilt were initially reserved for important people.

By the mid 17th century chairs became common.

There is general agreement the French may be thanked for making chairs more comfortable by adding upholstery and creating more styles for a variety of functions.
