SUNDAY NIGHTS @NASHVILLE1ST - 5:30PM
Join us as we say thank you and farewell to Pastor Bruce and Peggy Oldham. This will be an opportunity to say farewell beginning in the sanctuary and then moving to the Woodand Street Mall for a special reception.  The Oldhams will soon be leaving the States to serve the Church of the Nazarene in the Philippines.  Pastor Oldham has been elected the President of Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary.  We will miss them greatly but we are excited about what God will do through them in the future.  We invite you to participate in a special missionary offering for the Oldhams.  To give on-line, click HERE.

CONGRATULATIONS to STEPHANIE SMITH MATTHEWS who was just informed this week that she PASSED ALL EXAMINATIONS at Vanderbilt University and is now officially a candidate for her PhD Degree from the Divinity School there.  This is the culmination of a LONG and difficult journey.  Stephanie is part of our Branch Congregation and also serves on our Theology Team.

The Mortality Reality

Last weekend I had the distinct privilege of spending Saturday and Sunday with our NFCN softball teams at the Nazarene National Tournament in Cincinnati Ohio.  It was an incredible experience.

During the Sunday School hour at Springdale Nazarene, Dr. Ed Heck spoke to the hundreds of players, families and friends assembled there.  Ed has been pastor of Kankakee, Illinois First Nazarene for many years.  Being just an hour apart while at my last pastorate and serving on District Boards together, we became friends.

Around two months ago, Ed was diagnosed with prostate cancer and began a valiant fight.  His testimony Sunday revealed how God had sought and found him in a family saturated with alcohol as a young man.  The church surrounded him and became his life when he was called to preach. And he bravely shared how he and his wife Kathy were fighting through this diagnosis.  It was inspiring.  He looked great.  He stayed through the tournament Monday and planned to drive home Tuesday.  He never made it out of town. He died suddenly in a Cincinnati hospital Tuesday evening.

The jolting message of this tragic loss of a friend, as well as attending a funeral of another individual Monday who is younger than I am and died suddenly has reminded me again of my own mortality and the fragility of life.

The sobering truth is that none of us have any guarantees, do we?   Living in these fallen frames as children of God we are physically mortal.  It is imperative we live in personal relationship with our Creator through Jesus Christ our Lord.  That there "be nothing between my soul and the Savior."  That we live life to the full but also remain fully aware of reality.

This is not written to scare us but rather to challenge us to take spiritual stock of our lives and continue to grow and mature as disciples of Christ.  May it be so with all of us, of all ages!  Amen!  And may our testimony be as clear and fresh as Ed's was last Sunday.
