Sept. Int’l Coastal Cleanup events

Every year, community members from around the world (more than 190 countries!) come together in late September to coordinate an International Coastal Cleanup “ICC” event.  Here in Hawaiʻi that event is sometimes called “Get the Drift and Bag It!”.  HWF will be hosting two such events in honor of ICC this year, one on Sat., Sept. 17th at Hoʻokipa on Maui and one on Sat., Sept. 24th at Kamilo Point on Hawaiʻi Island.  Can’t make this event?  No worries.  You can also check with your local Surfrider Foundation Chapters, 808cleanups.org and on the Ocean Conservancy website to see where there are other cleanup events happening!

HWF is proud to announce that “Orion”- a proud mama Hawksbill sea turtle (honuʻea) - has now successfully laid five nests this season in South Maui. Even better news, the first two nests had a 99% success rate for the baby hatchlings (a new Maui record!)  and we are excited for nest #3 hatchlings arrivals in the coming weeks. The HWF Hawksbill Monitoring Project is funded, in-part, from a multi-year NOAA grant.  HWF is stoked on all the volunteer manpower (and wo-manpower) we have received during our past calls for dawn patrol and night watch monitoring volunteers.

For more info about how YOU can volunteer for one of our Maui turtle projects, please contact stacey.HWF@gmail.com ~ mahalo nui loa!

HWF goes to Oʻahu for the 2016 #IUCNcongress - This past week, HWF’s executive director, Hannah Bernard, joined our Ulithi project partners for a week at the IUCN World Conservation Congress. They were able to join KUA for a 2-day pre-workshop that included this hands-on restoration project at Punaluʻu. In addition, HWF’s Hawaiʻi Island program director, Megan Lamson, was able to attend the workshop forums and observe the first day of the IUCN members’ assembly! We are most grateful that HWF was able to be represented and share with our new / old conservation partners from around the world.  In all, this was the largest attended IUCN congress to date with over 10,000 participants and over 160 member countries represented.  For more info, check out their website and search social media outlets for the #IUCNcongress hashtag.
