The New Year of Learning
Begins!
Our Beit Midrash
Dear friends, נ"י,

First: Have you heard about our upcoming Eighteen Hour Shiur? If not, watch this brief video (less than two minutes long!), prepared by our avreich Adam Friedmann:

This week the Jewish world lost a leader known as both a scholar and a warrior, Rabbi She'ar Yashuv Cohen. Much has been written, and more will be written, about Rav Cohen.  For now, here is a brief list of some of the roles he played, to give a sense of his unique character:

* Son of the Nazir of Jerusalem, one of the closest students of Rav Avraham Yitzchak Kook;
* A close student of Rav Yaakov Mosher Charlap and Rav Tzvi Yehuda Kook, and he went on to become a Rosh Yeshiva;
* A soldier in Israel's War of Independence in 1948, and then an injured POW held by Jordan;
* A Lieutenant Colonel in the IDF;
* Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem in the 1960's;
* A volunteer in the Yom Kippur War in 1973;
* Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Haifa from 1975 through 2011;
* Member of the Board of Governors of Haifa University;
* Chief of the Senior Council for Dialogue between the Chief Rabbinate and the Vatican;
* Chief of the Council for Dialogue between Judaism and Islam

Rav She'ar Yashuv Cohen combined expertise in Torah with commitment to the Jewish nation and the State of Israel. He was outspoken on issues he felt were important, but he was also known for his generosity of spirit. He promoted and spread Torah, but Yona Yahav, mayor of the remarkably diverse city of Haifa, said of him, "He knew how to turn religion into a bridge between different segments of the population, Jews and non-Jews as one."

We have lost a great role model; may we merit to walk in his ways.
