President's Letter

Hendricks Families:

I would like to welcome back returning students and families and extend a welcome to new Hendricks families! To all of you, I look forward to making 2016-2017 a fun and productive year.

The purpose of the PTA is to first and foremost support our students. In addition, it supports the faculty, staff, parents, and the local community. Every Child-One Voice is the National PTA motto and the PTA is one of the strongest voices in the educational process that directly supports our children and school. This year will be no different.

An effective and successful PTA requires support and involvement of the parents and care givers of our students. It is vital. Your first opportunity to show support is to become a member of the Hendricks Avenue Elementary PTA.  Our membership drive is happening now.

Hendricks Avenue has had 45 years of 100% membership in PTA.  We'd like to make this year our 46th!!  Your PTA membership funds such amazing programs as Donuts with Dad, Family Fitness Night, Reading with the Stars, Cultural Arts Week, Boo Hoo Yahoo Breakfast,  Vision and Hearing Screening and Spring Carnival...just to name a few.

The Second Way that you can show your support is by participating the PTA Fall Fundraiser.  This year's fundraiser is in full swing and will end on September 19.  PTA is working with Charleston Wraps again this year.  Their catalog features many home and gift items, delectable candies and a beautiful assortment of wrapping paper. I ask that you continue to support this event.

The biggest way to support PTA is volunteering your time.  Keep on the lookout for volunteer opportunities throughout the school year.

A couple of upcoming items on the PTA calendar include our first general session meeting.  This meeting will take place on September 12th at 6pm, location TBD.  Please attend, we will be voting on the PTA budget for the 2016/17 school year.  The proposed budget can be found on the PTA website at www.HendricksPTA.org and posted on the bulletin board in the front hallway.

Be sure to stay up to date with all PTA happenings by liking the Hendricks Avenue PTA Facebook page and visiting the www.HendricksPTA.org website.

Thank you again for your support and I look forward to a great year!!

The top class, per grade level, with the highest PTA participation by September 30th will celebrate with donuts provided by PTA and an extra 15 minutes of recess!
Hendricks Avenue Elementary provides an amazing education for our children.  The PTA enriches this education by providing programs beyond the classroom such as Cultural Arts week and Meet the Masters art education. The PTA also hosts HAE community activities including Family Fitness Night,
Ice Cream Social and Donuts with Dad.

The PTA's only fundraiser started August 31st and ends September 19th. Last week, all students brought home a catalog of products from Charleston Wrap.  Inside the catalog, there is a detailed letter explaining the fundraiser and how to participate.  Please consider buying a few items or a lot!  Another option is to give a donation straight to the PTA. Don't forget to send the on-line link to family and friends to increase
sales.

Here is the link: www.charlestonwrapstore.com.  Our school's id number is: z-8590 and your student's 7-digit code is preprinted on the order form in your packets.

LIBRARY NEWS

Have you visited the HAE Library lately? Lots of changes are happening there! If you would like to find out  what your students are doing in the library each week, you can visit the new school library webpage.

The student at Hendricks will be participating in the Sunshine State Young Readers Awards program the year.  This is a statewide reading  program sponsored by the Florida Department of Education (DOE) and Florida Association for Media in Education (FAME). The purpose of the SSYRA Program is to encourage students to read independently for pleasure and to read books that are on, above, and below their reading level in order to improve their reading fluency.

The SSYRA committee is comprised of school librarians throughout Florida. Sunshine State books are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation. Student who read at least 3 of the books will be given the opportunity to vote on their favorite book.  The best book in the state of Florida will be voted on by KIDS ONLY!!

Our students are so excited about the program. We purchased one copy of each book for the library. The San Marco Garden Circle has generously donated a second set of 30 books! However, we are still in need of a few more copies... especially the chapter books. There is already a waiting list for each copy! If you would like to donate one of the SSYRA books in your child's honor, you can visit our Amazon wishlist. A special book plate will be placed in the book with your child's name on it.

You can find magic, wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book!
