In response to NYU’s changes to its bylaws in 2015, Stern’s existing policy on clinical faculty was updated, reviewed and approved by Stern’s Faculty Council, department chairs, clinical faculty representatives to the University Senate, and the Provost. The bylaws’ biggest impact on Stern’s policy is to create different reappointment review timing for contract terms of three or more years versus shorter lengths. We also took this opportunity to clarify a number of details in the policy. Click here to see the policy.
Retirement Information Session – September 21, 2016 Are you a tenured or clinical faculty member with questions about retirement? How do health insurance and all the other NYU benefits work after retirement? What is Medicare Part B or Part D? Can you use the Stern retirement program incentive?
To answer these and other questions, come to a retirement information luncheon on September 21, 2016, 12:30 – 2:30 pm. We’ll hear from representatives from the NYU Benefits Office, TIAA, Vanguard, and United Healthcare.RSVP here.

Prasanna (“Sonny") Tambe,
Associate Professor, IOMS - IS
Sonny Tambe joined Stern at an exciting moment -- in 2008, just before the financial crisis. He weathered that storm, and has now been a tenured associate professor for almost a week, since September 1, 2016. Congratulations, Sonny! Since joining Stern, his family has doubled to include a 5-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son.
Sonny spent his earliest years in Baton Rouge and Alabama, then lived in Atlanta from kindergarten through high school, though you’d never know it from his (lack of Southern) accent. He worked at a startup in Virginia building database search products, and then lived all over the northeast, including Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC, finally settling in what is now his favorite, New York City. At first, Sonny and his wife weren’t sure they’d like NYC, but as Sonny says, “you have to love it to live here,” and he does. Sonny studies technology and automation, and how it changes labor markets. He notes that the tech industry in New York City is thriving in part because of the amenities in the Big Apple.
Before having children, Sonny loved to cook. Now that his children are a bit older, and he has tenure, he hopes to get back to his culinary activities. Sonny reflects that having tenure doesn’t feel like a sudden change, nor does he feel settled yet. He plans to maintain his research drive and pace, but with a little less stress in the mix.
Stern manages a furnished one-bedroom apartment for short-term stays by NYU guests. Located in Washington Square Village, this lovely fully furnished apartment feels like home. Right across the street from Stern, the apartment has one bedroom, a spacious living room with pull-out sofa, dining area, terrace and full kitchen with dishwasher and cooking equipment and tableware, and bathroom with bathtub/shower. Bed and bath linens are provided. If you have a guest coming to Stern, please contact Susanna Stein (sstein@stern.nyu.edu) for more information.
Founded in spring 2012, the Stern Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) connects Stern undergraduates with faculty conducting research to foster a collaborative learning community where students and faculty engage outside of the classroom. To date, 82 faculty members have worked with over 310 students on 200+ research projects. Several SPUR student participants have gone on to pursue academia, having been accepted to PhD programs in Finance, Economics, Accounting, and Bio-Statistics at institutions such as Columbia, Chicago, MIT, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, and Yale.
SPUR is made possible because of your engagement, and we sincerely thank all of you who have participated over the years! Although the deadline to post SPUR opportunities has passed for the fall, please look out for an e-mail from Rohit Deo in early Spring when the SPUR database re-opens. In the meantime, please get in touch with Rohit (deandeo@stern.nyu.edu) or e-mail uc.spur@stern.nyu.edu if you have any questions.
