Joanie is the Kaiārahi Māori for theNelson Tasman Kindergartens and her passion is Māori being successful as Māori to achieve and reach their full potential. She will provide the Trust board with knowledge to support this overall vision and goal. To achieve this requires belief, commitment from both treaty partners to exercise their roles and responsibilities in ensuring they work together.

KIA NGĀWARI practices for Matatini are in full flight with up to 60 in attendance at any one noho. The age range of the group is as diverse as the many Iwi represented in it. It is an absolute pleasure to watch the growth and development of every performer who is bidding for a position in the 40 member competition team. A huge mihi to the tutors who tirelessly give of their efforts to prepare the team for this auspicious occasion. These practices are attended by a number of our kaumātua who give their moral support and knowledge to assisting the group towards a successful noho. The kai that comes out of the kitchen in abundance keeps the team fuelled and raring to go. Four of the groups performers travel in from Whangarei, Hamilton and Porirua to support the kaupapa. This is awe inspiring and a huge mihi goes to them for making that commitment. Thank you to the many who work in the background.
It is an exciting time for Ngāti Koata as Kapahaka has been attributed towards supporting the revitalisation of Te Reo me ōnā tikanga for a people. As you will understand the practices can not be recorded and shared with whānau as Kia Ngāwari are preparing for the Te Matatini National Kapahaka competitions in Heretaunga 2017.

This ticket gets you into the Kaumatua tent where you will be well looked after including catering.

Over the past couple of weeks he has been running a series of local Māori place name posts which have been very informative. Below are a few examples of this work.
Kei raro a Kōpūtīraha i te hiwi a Pikimai e hora nā. He wāhi mōmona, he wāhi mahinga kai i ngā wā ō nehe, haumako mō te kohi kai i te awa pērā ki te tuna te kōkopu me te kēwai. Haumako anō hoki mō ngā hua ā Tāne pērā ki te toitoi, te tawa, te tōtara, te matai me te kaikōmako. Nā ēnei hua, kīkī rawa a Kōpūtīraha i te manu. Ngaro katoa ēnei rauemi inaianei. Ka tū te taone matua o Whakatū whānui ki runga ki a Kōpūtīraha inaianei.
The area the Nelson central business district is located on is called Kōpūtīraha. It was once a food gathering area with the river and haven providing both salt and freshwater kai; fertile soil providing crops; and a plentiful bush cover providing birds, berries and rongoa.
Kei tua a Pikimai i a Kōpūtīraha. He puke tirowhanga, he pā Māori ō mua. Muri iho i te tārukenga ki Tuamarino i te tau 1843 i hanga pā e te Kamupene o Niu Tireni ki runga o Pikimai. E tū atu ana te whare karakia Mihinare inaianei.
Pikimai, also known as Church Hill, overlooks the central business district of Nelson. It was the site of Fort Arthur before a cathedral was built on the site. Christ Church Cathedral is now one of Nelson's most recognisable landmarks.
HOROIRANGI: Kei Horoirangi tētehi wāhi tapu ki ā Ngāti Koata i kiia nei ko Ngā Urukehu. Nā Matiu Te Mako i tapaina mō te harakeke i tupu ki reira. He whero te tai o te harakeke pērā ki tō Matiu makawe. Nā te whārite ki ōna makawe ka tapu te wāhi. I reira ia i te wā o te takahi whenua whai atu i te Tuku.
Horoirangi is a steep rocky stretch of coastline where the rocks from Te Tahuna a Kereopa (Boulder Bank) originate from. A marine reserve now covers the coastal area. Matiu Te Mako, a chief of Ngāti Koata, passed through this area during the Walk after the Tuku and named places through this area.
UPDATE ON THE FRENCH PASS NURSES RESIDENCE -As taken from the Ngāti Koata face book page. Thank you all for your comments, emails and kōrero in regards to the possible purchasing of this residence. It certainly has been exciting to have so much feedback.
The Board discussed the Nurses Residence at their August meeting , and have decided to register an Expression of Interest on the property. It is not a decision to purchase at this stage. That decision would be dependent on due diligence over the property, such as LIM and inspection reports etc. The Expression of Interest will prevent the Crown from placing the property on the open market until we decide if we want it or not.
The possible purchase of this property through the Right of First Refusal clause in our Treaty Settlement is an opportunity to further our ipukareatanga, and will not affect the possible purchase of properties in any other part of our rohe.
WORK BEE Thank you to all those that came down to the working bee and volunteered your time and energy towards making Te Haeata a better place for our people. The workers felled trees, chopped wood, cleared over and under growth, weeded gardens, created a new walkway, scrubbed ovens, sanded walls, fixed the clothesline, removed rubbish and ate beautiful kai all weekend! We were blessed with beautiful weather and great company all weekend which made working more enjoyable.
There are some finishing touches to be made on some of the work that was started, but all in all so much was achieved.

TE HAEATA COMMITTEE The committee is made up of the following representative groups.
Two from the Kaumatua council
Two from He Kupu reanga
Two from the Ahi Kaa - Rangitoto/French Pass
Two elected representatives.
This committee currently meets every third Tuesday of the month from 1pm up here at the Ngāti Koata Trust Offices.

Te Haeata is still available for Ngāti Koata people who intend on travelling down early or plan on leaving the next day.
Please be aware that if you are staying Friday night you will need to be up early Saturday morning to pack up and clean up the whare so we are ready for the day.
Te Haeata will be utilised by the committee for the GALA events on Saturday.
The top house will be designated for Kaumatua and whānau with young babies.

The Ngāti Koata Trust (NKT) and Te Pātaka a Ngāti Koata Trust Boards (TPNKT) seek letters of application for the following role:
Resources Advisor – Human Resources Committee, Ngāti Koata Group
The Human Resources (HR) Advisor must have a bachelor’s degree in HR Management or similar relevant tertiary qualification, or at least 5+ years HR and employment relations experience. You will also be familiar with relevant legislation, organisational policy, and Tikanga Māori. The position is part of the HR Committee accountable to the NK and TPNKT boards. As an independent member of this Committee you will help the Boards to perform and uphold its HR responsibilities to the Group, including the oversight, review, monitoring, and evaluation of HR-related matters included, but not limited to, recruitment, selection, appointment, induction, performance, management, exit, and dismissal practices. The Committee meets as and when required, with at least one hui of two hours duration held every month and/or around one to two hours preparatory work and/or separate advice. A remuneration package of $120 per hour is offered for the position, up to a maximum $5000 per annum. It is expected that the successful applicant will be based in Nelson. Interested applicants may request a Position Description which includes a copy each of the Expression of Interest for Appointment form to be completed by the applicant and the HR Committee’s terms of reference. Interested applicants may then submit an Expression of Interest form and, if they chose, a covering letter applying for the position, along with a current CV, including referees and any other information considered to be relevant. OPPORTUNITY: DOC PARTNERSHIPS MANAGER, Nelson (Full Time)
The Department of Conservation is the central government agency that is charged with managing New Zealand’s natural and historic heritage on behalf of all New Zealanders. The Department’s vision is that New Zealand is ‘the greatest living space on Earth’. To achieve this vision, the Department is focusing on working with others to achieve more conservation.
We are looking for an inspirational leader to join the Partnerships Group as the Partnerships Manager Nelson. This position is responsible for:
Providing leadership of step change growth work to accelerate achievement of the Department’s stretch goals;
Strengthening the Department’s existing relationship with Iwi, Local Government and other conservation project partners;
Collaborating across the Partnership Group to contribute as a project team leader and project team member as necessary to achieve step change growth outcomes;
Collaborating across the other Department Groups to ensure clear alignment of projects with Department priorities.
Reporting to the Director, Partnerships (Nelson), you will lead multiple high performing project teams across a number of step change growth projects.
