Newsletter #15

23rd September 2016

Kia ora whānau,

As we reflect over the term there's a key element that has been evident across the term - a sense of community.
Last week we saw the school perform at the Otago Maori and Pacific Island Festival.  This was a fantastic opportunity to showcase our school to the wider community. Whakawhetai (thanks) to wahine Mrs Tyson and Lauana Thomas for all their hard work preparing the tamariki. The tamariki did a fantastic effort on the big stage.  If you missed it, please click on the image below which will take you to the school Facebook page where there are videos of our performances.

Bringing our whanau community into the school has been a highlight for the term.  Earlier in the term we had the shared Hot Chocolate lunch and last week we had our year 7 & 8 technology students putting their skills together to sell healthy burgers to the students and their families.  Money earned from the sale of these burgers will go towards their class fair contribution that they will be selling. Here are those students preparing the burgers.

Finally, I would like to thank those parents in our school community who are giving up their time to help sort, organise and prepare for our school fair that is being held next term, Saturday 5th November.  The fair organising committee however would welcome more assistance leading up to the fair.  If you are able to give any time to sort, bake, prepare, deliver or something towards the school fair, please let Michelle know in the office and we will pass your name to the committee.  It's important to note that all children in the school will benefit from the funds raised at the fair so help from all our families would be great.
Have a great two week break with your children, take care.

Nga mihi,

Kim Blackwood

News from Ruma Tahi

We have had an exciting term and have really enjoyed Mr Heyward teaching us. We especially enjoyed learning how to play the drums and we explored friction in our Science lessons.

We have thanked Mr Heyward for all his great work and for graduating as a teacher. We think that the first class he has will be very lucky!

This week we were very proud of Emse, Kaedyn, Nikau, Ethan and Moana who represented us at MM2 sharing session at the Otago University Rowing Club. We have learnt so much through the MM2 project and hope that we can continue to stay involved in the research.  We have included our presentation in this newsletter so we can share our learning about this important issue with our school community.

Have a great holiday and see you next term.

Nga mihi,
Ruma Tahi.

The harbour needs our helping hands!

By Esme

The harbour is important to Māori because we are the Kaitiaki of the environment.

The harbour and the environment link us to our Whakapapa – our past, present and future.

Arthur Street School is the oldest school in Dunedin. It began in 1848 on the ships that brought our early settlers from England to New Zealand. Our very first Arthur Street children sailed up the harbour to arrive in their new home. For this reason the Otago Harbour is very special to us and we want to look after it for the children now and in the future.

We think that it is important to keep researching to see what impact dredging might have on our harbour and we hope that the MM2 project continues.

We have loved learning how to work as scientists and on behalf of Room 1 we would like to say thank you to everyone who has helped us, especially Matt and Sally from Otago University.

Please visit the Otago Museum Search Centre from Tuesday 27 September until the end of the school holidays to see MM2 research presentations from Room 1 and the other participating schools.
Room 5

Wow term 3 is nearly over! The children in room 5 have been extremely busy, taking part in a number of activities throughout their school day.

The classroom focus continues to be Science and the understanding of
the ‘Nature of Science’.

Over the past month the children have been learning that matter is anything that takes up space.

What is Matter?

By Tom McGowen

What’s the matter, do you ask?
I’ll tell you right away.
It’s everything around you; as
You work or sleep or play.

A chair is matter, a table too,
And so is a rock or tree.
A cloud, a star, a blade of grass,
A raindrop, a bumblebee.

The earth is matter, so is the sea.
And the sky is matter, too.
(Of course what matters most of all
Is the matter that is you)

Bubble Bombs

The children have made ‘Bubble Bombs’ so they can understand what happens when they mix different chemicals together. When vinegar is mixed with baking soda, a chemical reaction takes place, which causes a gas to form. This gas is carbon dioxide, which forms bubbles in the liquid. These carbon dioxide bubbles expand in the bag causing it to ‘POP’

Chocolate Fondue

The children observed a solid (chocolate) changing its state to a liquid (melting). This reaction was caused by heat. The children now realise that heat acts as a catalyst, changing a solid to a liquid.

Swimming
School swimming will begin on Friday of the first week in term 4 for the whole school - the juniors will swim at Moana Pool and the seniors at Otago Boys' High School.
Please take the time to hunt out swimsuits (check that they fit!) and goggles.  As swimming is an important life skill the expectation is that all children will participate.
