Recycle Week 12th-18th September 2016

National recycling week has started! This year's theme is ‘The Unusual Suspects’.  These items are often put in the rubbish- but can actually be recycled, such as toothpaste boxes, deodorant aerosols and shampoo bottles. To check items you're unsure of go to our A-Z of recycling.

Look out for our tweets from @CityWestminster throughout Recycle Week and search #UnusualSuspects #RecycleWeek and follow/ like/ retweet- Twitter-@recycle_now and Facebook- www.facebook.com/recyclenow  to check out all the interesting stuff that will be taking place during Recycle Week 2016.

Also, keep a look out for our new Facebook page which will be launching soon.

Have any recycling questions? Pop down to our Recycle Week stands this week and speak to the team.

Ever wonder what happens to your recycling? Find out more through a free family fun day!
Westminster City Council and Veolia are inviting Westminster residents and business owners to come along to a free family fun day:
  • Saturday 17th September 10am to 4pm
  • Southwark Integrated Waste Management facility, 43 Devon Street, SE17 1AL
  • Tours run all day, open to 7 years + (no open toes or high heels)
  • Other activities open for all age groups
  • Free – no advance booking required
This is a great opportunity to learn first-hand how recyclables are sorted into separate materials so they can go on and be made into something new.

Did you know that Westminster's rubbish isn't sent to landfill?   It's actually burnt at an energy-from-waste site- SELCHP. This incinerator is having an open day as part of Open House London on Sunday 18th September from 10am-3pm for the public to find out more.
Have any broken electronics? Repair is better than recycling
We are hosting a Restart Party to encourage residents to repair their broken electronics. Come along with any electronics in need of repair, such as tablets, phones, kettles, laptops or fans to our Restart Party on Saturday 5th November 12noon-3pm @  The Abbey Centre 34 Great Smith St, London SW1P 3BU
‘In It To Win It’- One Year Anniversary
Westminster’s ‘In It To Win It’ reward scheme for estates celebrates its first year anniversary! The more an estate recycles correctly, the more it can win in terms of rewards for the local community.

Nearly 60 of Westminster’s estates are taking part- with 19 estates so far winning £15,000.  Prizes so far have included funding children’s activities at community centres, supplying free energy saving light bulbs to residents and new plants for communal gardens.

To celebrate the great work Holcroft Court residents have undertaken in reducing their contamination, this estate has been awarded an extra £1,000. The residents from Holcroft Court have been taking extra care to ensure that only accepted items are put in their recycling bins.

Remember, the scheme runs for another year so please do as much as you can to ensure you are recycling as many accepted items as you can, and encourage friends and family to do the same.  There are plenty more rewards to be won!

Check out our webpage to find out if your estate is included in the scheme and to see how much it has won so far.
