Earth911 has been tops on my green living list for years and they continue to expand and improve their outreach. If you haven't used their Recycling Search, keep it in mind for your Fall Cleaning (see below). The largest directory in North America, just enter your item and zip code and up pops a list of who in your area will recycle it. The list includes details like hours, restrictions and even pick up service and mail in options. Use it for everything from motor oil and batteries to appliances and toys. Speaking of toys, there's even a category search for recycling "adult" toys. Whatever floats your boat, folks - let's just do our best to keep it out of the landfill. Start Here: Americans throw out 180,000 tons of disposable and rechargeable batteries every year. Don’t throw those batteries in the trash. Like computer parts, batteries contain heavy metals such as lead and mercury. When the batteries go to landfills, these metals end up poisoning the environment and are not available for recovery and reuse.
