While a decrease in the pay gap has been reported, continued action is essential to reduce the gender pay gap for women lawyers with reports that the pay gap between female and male lawyers is one of the largest professional industry pay gaps.  Just 12 months into her new role, Libby Lyons has said the top priority for her five-year term is to make a dent in the gender pay gap, which sits at 24 per cent for full-time total remuneration. Equal Pay Day falls on 8 September this year, marking the additional time from the end of the previous financial year that women must work to earn the same as men. In Ms Lyons’ words: "The data shows the gender pay gap has decreased, which is great, but women still earn substantially less than men. We need continued work on the part of employers to maintain the momentum to further improve women’s economic security in Australia."
Ms Lyons also said that employers have an important role to play in challenging stereotypes and barriers to participation: “Smart CEOs and executives recognise that diversity is good for business and in order to stay ahead of their competitors to attract and retain the best and brightest candidates, they must be driving an inclusive workplace culture with offering such as flexible working arrangements, access to comprehensive parental leave and equal pay for women and men.”
Libby Lyons was appointed as Director of the Workplace Gender Equality Agency for a period of five years from October 2015. Prior to joining the Agency, Libby held senior management roles across the corporate and government sectors in the energy, resources and telecommunications industries. Libby started her working life as a primary school teacher and so has experience in working in both female and male dominated industries and understands first hand that a more diverse work group makes for better decision making and organisational performance.

Mahlab Report 2016: Legal market upturn as industry adapts to changing marketplace

A Rosie Batty Roadshow Breakfast is being held in Sydney on 13 October 2016 at the Four Season’s Hotel, with Rosie herself speaking at the event.
All proceeds from the breakfast will go to the benefit of Women’s Legal Service NSW, which provides free legal services to women across NSW. Women’s Legal Service NSW has opted for all funds raised at the Sydney breakfast to go towards Bonnie women’s refuge (Bonnie Support Service) to provide a solicitor for a regular drop-in advice service at its premises in south west Sydney. The Roadshow breakfast is also aimed at promoting a national approach to law reform and supporting the United Nation’s Orange the World campaign.

Domestic Violence is Everyone’s Business
 In 2002 Anj Barker was brutally assaulted by a boyfriend and left for dead. It is hard to imagine how anyone could be so callous and cowardly. Anj’s life hung on a knife-edge in an intensive care unit – life would be different from that night onward.
Despite Anj’s traumatic brain injury, she continues to recover and advocates tirelessly around Australia and overseas on violence in relationships and equality for people with a disability. She has spoken to over 30,000 young people and been awarded Young Australian of the Year. Anj has also been voted one of the 100 most influential Women in Australia. She has also advised policy for United Nations on domestic violence.
Now she needs Australia’s help to replace her wheelchair accessible van so she can continue her campaign for change.
Anj is a great Australian, a powerful voice and a worthwhile investment into Australia’s young people. The Gowland Awards - The Night of Nights for Domestic Violence Workers
There’s a lot more public awareness about domestic violence these days, but if you work with its survivors you’d know there’s still a long way to go. Not only do you witness firsthand its impact on the women and children in your care, but you’ll also hear outrageous comments and excuses in the media and community that trivialise domestic violence and those it affects.
So, where do you turn to let off steam and have your say?
This November, the inaugural Gowland Awards offer an opportunity to denounce domestic violence deniers. It’s your chance to gather with peers for an irreverent evening to:
- Lampoon negative representations of domestic violence, and
- Recognise excellence in raising awareness of the issue
