Policy, Systems, and Environmental Change Health Equity Forum

We hosted the third-annual Policy, Systems, and Environmental Change Health Equity Forum at Highline College. The busy day kicked off with an instructional keynote by guest Keith Benjamin of the Safe Routes to Schools National Partnership.
Benjamin encouraged attendees to be mindful of the tendency to avoid challenges that may arise in the realm of policy change and reminded attendees to stretch and embrace discomfort when working toward health equity goals. He also challenged attendees to continually acknowledge those they work with on a regular basis, as there is a change in one's perspective when they feel they are being seen and heard.
HKCC Leadership trainees Rahel Schwartz, Carolyn Solitaire, and Natasha Jenkins shared their experience with the training. The PSE forum closed with a candid discussion facilitated by HKCC Equity and Governance Team member Yalonda Speaks featuring Senator Joe Fain and Councilmember De'Sean Quinn. Fain and Quinn fielded questions on their journey into political work, speaking frankly of their experience.
Each stressed the importance of creating relationships with one's political representatives as well as community leaders. Fain and Quinn made clear that relationships can and should be made across partly lines, a refreshing perspective that will be important to remember as we approach the 2017 legislative season.

Thank you to Keith Benjamin of Safe Routes to Schools, HKCC Leadership trainees Rahel S., Carolyn S., and Natasha J., and Senator Joe Fain and Councilmember De'Sean Quinn for making our PSE Forum a success!

Health Equity Policy Round Table Discussion
On August 12th, HKCC held the Health Equity Policy Round Table at the Pacific Tower with panelists Dr. Wanda Billingsly, Debra Entenman of Congressmen Adam Smith's office, Representative Cindy Ryu, and Representative Eric Pettigrew. Participant comments from the round table discussion noted an appreciation for hearing the differing perspectives of our panelists. Representing a range of experiences, a common theme from the morning's discussion was the encouragement of attendees to maintain relationships with their elected officials. Panelists noted that attendees should not only contact their representatives when asking for support, but to also comment on what representatives are doing well.

'Don't Be Fooled' - Our tobacco prevention campaign returns!

HKCC's Tobacco, Marijuana, and Other Drugs (TMoD) Workgroup have been busily preparing for the second run of their successful 'Don't Be Fooled' Campaign. TMoD has created light rail and billboard advertisements (pictured above) as well as a Pandora radio segment. If you spot an advertisement, snap a photo and share it with us!
Speaking of Bus Advertisements, be on the lookout for FEEST's campaign, up and running now! Developed over the past year by their youth food justice interns, the culturally relevant media campaign promotes healthy eating and takes aim at the way the fast food industry targets youth. Congratulations on your hard work, FEEST!

Dr. Juana Royster's Innovative Approach to Education

Community-based health and nutrition equity educator and friend of HKCC Dr. Juana Royster was highlighted by the Seattle Medium for her approach to food education. In the article Royster states 'I believe strongly that you do not just throw things at people; you have to really bring them in if you really want them to learn', continuing to say that one must 'talk with them [the students], not at them. That was how I taught' - thank you for your approach to education, Dr. Royster!
Visit the Seattle Medium for the full write-up on Royster's work.
